  • Sixthsphere Runs the Dragon 2019

Okay guys, time to start planning the next one. So the last dragon trip was fun, but I was not a fan of going in July... too many butterflies migrating, too hot, too rainy. September 2019 should be nice and mild. Typically the cabin rates are a little cheaper after labor day because it's considered off season. Also I'd like to try one more day, the two nights we were up there just didn't seem long enough. Maybe 3 nights this time? I always book the Hemlock cabin which sleeps 5 comfortably. Last year it was $83/person for 2 nights so 3 nights will likely be close to $120/person after taxes and resort fees. The people in my cabin I'll message you the price since I got in on that flash sale. I'll be posting this on the Facebook groups, but any members on those pages wanting to go must be a member on the sphere. That method seems to sift through the idiots wanting to go. Anyway, enough chit-chatting. I'll be keeping this first post updated as I gather cabin rates and set dates. As usual, I'm sharing the same useful info I post every year so read through it below.

Check in 4pm Thursday Sept 19th

Check out by 11am Sunday Sept 22 (AJ's cabin)

First off, there will be little to no reception up there so if you have Google maps, I suggest you download the area we'll be driving in just in case you get lost or need to find a place. Here's how to do it:

BE IN WIFI!!! You also need around 50mb of room on your phone depending on how big of an area you download.
    1. Go to the drop down menu and select offline areas.
    2. Add a new offline area at the bottom right.
    3. Select the area you want to download and click download.
    4. It will ask you to name it then proceed to download.

Something I also learn is even GPS is spotty, I noticed it myself. This problem ultimately victimized one of the people who was supposed to come. So learn to read road signs and have general knowledge of your cardinal directions. Shoot, bring a compass if you have to!

    ITEMS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR CABIN:
    -Paper Plates
    -Plastic Utensils
    -Trash Bags
    -Antiseptic Wipes
    -Water
    -First Aid
    -Ingredients for meals planned
-Ziploc Bags (for left over muchies)
    -Foil
    -Disposable baking dishes
-BBQ pit, lighter, lighter fluid, charcoal (needed only if you want to BBQ)

There is a General Store on the resort that has basic grocery items if you forget something.

BRING A WALKEE TALKEE. They don't work fantastic up in the mountains, but it's virtually the only way to communicate to your group while at the resort or while driving. This is a need. I bought a set on Amazon for less than $30 shipped and that way I had an extra for someone else.

Lastly, be safe and please BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS AND DRIVE WITHIN YOUR COMFORT ZONE. Don't feel like you have to push your vehicle to catch up with the others if you fall behind. This is how accidents happen (and they have happened in the past) and the group is pretty good about slowing down occasionally for the others to catch up. Sometimes the group will stop at an overlook, especially at the Cherohala Skyway. Be prepared for sudden stops. We've had rear end collisions because somebody wasn't paying attention. Overall, just have fun. It's a great experience!

Subject to change but the current schedule goes as follows:

    Thursday 19th
    Arrival Day
1-5pm - check in + recovery - Make sure people know where the group is at

If we can get a good run in with most people this would be a great day to try and get some group killboy/photo shots because roads are less busy on weekdays. (I think killboy packs up at 6ish)

    5:30pm quick bite to eat

5:30-7pm - evening dragon run, chill at the dock watch the fog roll in

    8pm pool?

    Friday 20th
    8-10am - Breakfast/Brunch Cookout

10am - 1pm Group Photo at the Dam + Dragon Run

    1pm - 2pm Quick nite to eat/nap time

    2pm- 6pm Cherohala Skyway Run

    6pm - evening
Dinner at El Pacifico ( Robbinsville ) after Skyway run

8pm chill at the pool until bedtime

    Saturday 21st
    8am - 10am Breakfast

    10am - 12pm Dragon Run

    12pm - 1pm Lunch

    1pm - 5pm
Tentative run on the Diamondback via the Blue Ridge Parkway + Asheville Visit
    Or
    Afternoon on the lake

    https://diamondback226.com/

    5-6pm Dinner

    6-8pm Evening dragon run

WOO HERE WE GO!!!! It's not gonna be the dragon if we don't have to find keys for 4 hours so make sure to bring good ass drinks lol. I'm down to go although if I go I may book and air bnb I've been watching that's a bit down the road. Should sleep about 5-6 probably and has a garage and big driveway will update!

Cannot attach pics of the house besides this one but it's looking like they raised their prices from last time I looked but it's still doable they allow up to seven guests. 158 a night

We usually have more than 7 people, that's why we book multiple cabins at the same resort so we're close by. Reception is nil so it's nice to be near each other for communication. Looks cool though.

Aj the reason I like this one is because it's right next to Fontana it's like just down the back road I'll get the map, I don't mind the normal cabins I was just gonna throw this out there. It's just at the start of that rear entrance.Screenshot_20181125-122436.jpg

They don't put it on the ad before you book but it's one of the first houses on rhymers ferry Rd coming out of the back of Fontana.

Now that I'm looking again it is a bit far, maybe if there's not enough interest but if we can all stay in Fontana that would probably be better

We are all familiar with Fontana so it's kinda nice.

I also agree the later the better cooler temperatures are a must.

I want to go but it depends on when Melissa and I decide to go on our NE vaca this year.

As of now any of those dates would work.

Fontana works well, but the surrounding area would be cool. If we only have enough to fill a single house, that could be an option imo. But it makes it harder for those who aren't staying within earshot.

Come hell or high water, I'm coming this year. Some of you know the story. At least me, maybe wife or buddy. So I'm down for whatever, longer event is better, esp for those that really have to travel.

Glad Toka is going, maybe make the trek together, makes journey more fun.
It's not my fault, blame the radiation.
