i got my 99 SWP, in the end of 09 and the stock auto trans broke 2 months later. i decided to swap in a dohc and a manual trans. now for those that dont know me ive done plenty of swaps, but this one was a little harder.
The rhd saturns never came with a manual trans. the way the engine is sittuated does not accomidate a RHD platform. the RHD brake master cylinder is still on the left side, they used a 2" round tube to hook the pedal to on one side and hook into the LHD master on the other side. the intake manifold is in the way of a clutch master clyinder on the right side.
the shift cables and shifter went in easy except for the ac/heat duct gets in the way when shifting to 1-3-5.
i tried using the lhd master cylinder but couldnt get a good way to mount it where it woudnt be into the manifold. i bought a wilwood 7/8 master cylinder with a optional remote reservoir. the stock pedal mounted fine with a little work. but the wilwood master and stock pedal would not work together without interfering again with the manifold. finally i bought a wilwood master and pedal assembly that can be mounted above or below. this was the last option, if this didnt work i was going back to an auto trans. finally this setup worked and the pedal was mounted where it was comfortable and the hose coming out the firewall low enough.
the slave was another problem, i was hoping to use a stock slave and find a way to hook up a new hydraulic line. the line i used wasnt sturdy enough the the minor expansion of the line wasnt giving enough pressure to fully disengage the clutch. so i bought a cnc slave and made a bracket so that it would bolt up to the trans.
the clutch disengages nicely now, i think its even a little softer then the stock hydraulics with the ACT 6 puck. i have only driven it around the block a few times so far, but atleast it moves on its own now.
this car sat for 2 1/2 years without running because i got stuck trying to get the clutch to work then got preoccupied with other projects. ive had 2 trans ams, 2 mustangs, mr2 spyder, Z06, wrx, rhd cherokee, lifted cherokee. and the only 2 things i didnt mess with were the two cherokees,
i still have some more work to the engine side of it. its idling way to high(2200), valve cover wont stop leaking, i think my rad has a small leak. car feels sluggish but i havent driven an all motor 4 cylinder in a long time.
the engine i put in is from a 94 so the plugs are all different and there are left over plugs everywhere. its been 3+ years since ive really been into saturns, so i forget a lot of the stuff from before.
i'm not sure if my injectors are right. and i'm still running a sohc ecu. i'm guessing i'll need to swap that asap.
anyway onto some pics of my car.
