The Turbo Turd
Well, time for a rebuild of sorts.
The car for some time has had an oil leak from the bottom of the oil pan to the tcc. Basically the oil pan bolts have been stripped out since before I purchased this motor. However it’s not bad but, I’m tired of leaving my mark every where with it.
From there my transmission (MP2) has seemed to get worse since I blew out the diff pin this last summer. I got lucky and got it fixed for free but, regardless something else was going also in it. Basically I’ve lost 1st and 2nd gear and in order to shift into one of them I have to shift it back into 1st to go to 2nd and the opposite to go into 1st. very odd. So a new transmission is in order here. I’ll just have to swap out the new welded diff.
Last I’ve been having a smoking problem on start up this summer. At one point this last summer my oil restrictor became clogged and the turbo was not getting the oil it needed. So yes, the bearing and center cartridge was shot. From there I had gotten a new K26 and began the rebuild on it. I thought the smoking was at first from the turbo but, I was wrong. The odd part is the compression is still good on all the cylinders at about 185-190 range. But, number one cylinder when I pull the plug has oil on it. So I’m banking that the rings are going bad on this cylinder. I had also pulled the head off this summer and replaced the head gasket and confirmed the piston is fine so it’s got to be rings and the numbers are false since there is oil in that cylinder.
Oh almost forgot, I found on the way to the last Missouri Saturn meet my car was leaking coolant out the cap just a bit. So we had gotten a few new caps but the same result every time even though the car is not over heating. I notice a pattern though that it would blow coolant out the cap when I’m in the boost for long on highway pulls. Well turns out that I’m lifting the head under boost on top end.
So while I’m at it the Turd is going to get:
Piston rings
Rod Bearings (have)
Crank Bearings (have)
Cylinder re-hone (will be done)
Head gasket
Timing chain cover (have)
New MP2
Mega Squirt
These things basically have to be done and some have been put off for to long (megasquirt). I still have plans to get the car painted in the spring or early summer as I’m saving for all these parts and paint. So slowly it will go.
As far as the paint goes I’m debating going all black or just painting the fenders and trunk silver to match. But, this could be based on money at the time. I don’t have a preference either way on the color.
If all else goes well, I’ll be working with Matt/Waterboy and see about getting one of his new fancy short throw shifters. It has also been mentioned about making or altering my intake manifold with a new GM 2.5” or 3” throttle body like what Waterboy and Pimpedsc2 have done with theirs. Aside from there I hope to also get that polished valve cover Matt/Waterboy has been working on.
Future plans: which I’m not sure when they will be done if ever.
