  • Ryan's mulletmobile: Project Money Pit *now with fewer leaks*

I'll throw up some pics once I get back up to my parent's house to retrieve the car.

    1996 Firebird Formula
    5.7L LT1 V8
    T56 six speed tranny
    T-Tops

Currently in need of a clutch and transmission. Found a T56 at a junkyard in Lakeland. Picking it up Thursday for $1334 after taxes and core charge. Probably gonna go with a duralast clutch, as the engine is mostly stock. Gonna get the clutch later today, and hopefully get it tagged and registered on thursday.

Probly gonna get flamed for this, but taking it to Saturn of the Lakes to have the work done. Can't get away with having a car on jackstands for a week or so in my garage at my complex, so I'll have to pay out for it.

Will post pics of all the shit as I get the parts.

Yeah they always seem to go for a mint. Even mine being rebuilt and upgraded was $1200.

shit man that's cheap. Down here a rebuilt unit goes for a minimum of 2k usually.

How much would it cost to rebuild it yourself? still over a grand?

Re: Ryan's mulletmobile: Project Money Pit

Well i guess that's not too bad for that trans if you know it's in perfect working order and doesn't have a million miles on it. I don't really know much about F bodies, but I know they can be made pretty quick for not a ton of money with the LT1. Any other plans for it?

Re: Ryan's mulletmobile: Project Money Pit

thanks corey, gonna use that website later on. probably gonna attempt to rebuild the current borked tranny to have a spare down the road. the price for the complete rebuild kit is still sticker shock to most saturn owners, though, haha.

main plans for this thing are to get it in good running order to have a civilized DD. first up after she gets running again is new headlight motors and window motors, and new switches for the driver's door. might do a few bolt-ons down the road such as headers, 1.6 roller rockers, etc.

odd thing is mine might have a mild cam in it. i've never heard a stock LT1 before, so i have no clue what they're supposed to sound like. all i know is that the PCM/ECM whatever it's called has been reprogrammed to at least a bare minimum of no rev limiter and not throwing any OBD-II codes from a missing rear o2 sensor. and i really can't think of a *good* reason to reprogram the computer unless there was an actual reason to reprogram it (such as a cam).

also, on my shitty ass driving with the rest of the car stock, it ran about a half second faster than it should have in the 1/4, and that's with over 145k on the engine.

after i get it back on the road, i'm gonna hit the dyno and see if i can figure out some of the oddities on this car. (one such oddity: the passenger side exhaust has a cat but no flexpipe. the driver's side exhaust has a flexpipe but no cat. and there's no cat after the pipes merge together.)

here we see a wild T56 nestled in its natural environment, snuggling up with its favorite nitrous bottle.
