  • Coppertop's Fiero project

Thought I would update all ya on the Fiero project until my site has all the update information on it.

I have started with the engine/tranny setup, the frame will be getting some more welding this weekend (weather should be about 5 degrees above freezing so it gives me a short window to work on the metal working), and I have started working on converting the rear clip to the fast back style.

I have a couple pics of the engine teardown and parts that I have waiting to start construction.

Keep in mind that head is a LNF and will be replaced by a LSJ, thats why I am disassembling the motor, to swap pistons and head for a LSJ.

A couple update pics, I was supposed to get a shit load more work done this weekend, but the puppy really put a cramp into that. I was able to put the engine/tranny mounts on today and start mocking up the whole thing in the subframe.

Here are a couple pics, keep in mind its sitting a little high right now due to the fact I need to cut out portions of the frame to make the mounts fit, it will be sitting about 3 inches lower than it is right now.

Pictures removed due to hosting issues, updated pics are lower down the page

              Re: Coppertop's Fiero project

Well I don't have a S-series anymore, and I don't have any need for any of the parts........that and I needed room for the fiero parts that I am gathering up.

Still love the S-series, but it was time to move on to RWD

As for the mounts, I am getting a new lateral bar cut (to replace the one on the front thats right under the mount) to incorporate the mount into the bar. Once thats welded in, then I can drop the engine 3" and get it sitting much better and I can locate the rear tranny mount and build the bracket to weld to the frame.

I hope to have the front and rear tranny mounts done by next weekend so I can take the frame home and do a test fit of the engine/tranny/frame into the chassis and I can measure up the brackets that I am going to need for the engine TAM and transmission TAM mount. The best part is once thats done I can pretty much send the chassis to sandblasting and weld the crap out of everything.

                Re: Coppertop's Fiero project

Got a part fab'd up today, its going to replace the front lateral brace in the subframe. I needed to build a new one for the ecotec motor mount and also move the whole bar forward 2" to make clearance for the ecotec block (there is a bolt location for the AC, which I ain't running that is hitting the stock subframe) keep in mind in these photo's the engine will be sitting aprox 3" lower than where it is sitting now.

Keep in mind I have only tack welded this with a TIG welder, it will be completely welded when I know everything is going to fit and work out.

As for all the holes, I was trying to lighten it up a bit, and be creative since I have the equipment at work todo that.........might have gone too far, but it is pretty light, will see how it compares to the stock piece when I cut it out.

are you going to have have custom axles made? I'm very curious because when/if i get a fiero this is what ill be doing to it.

                    Re: Coppertop's Fiero project

actually a couple other guys on the fiero forums say that stock axles will work.......they are only 1/2" shorter than fiero's, and they will work with the stock fiero hubs.

                          Re: Coppertop's Fiero project

Really getting my ass into gear now.......got a set of driveshafts that I should have in a short while as well as the jack shaft for the transmission.

Got a bit of welding done, had a small problem with the mounting location, nothing a cutoff wheel and a little welding can't fix. Engine is now in its proper mounting location and the first mount is done (save the final welding), next week I will have the rear tranny mount mocked up and the whole thing should be ready for its first test fit into the chassis and design the engine/transmission torque axis mounts.

Cause I don't want the PITA and costs involved with getting the direct injection setup to work on the LNF head.
