• Project "REBUILD" (IT RUUUUUNS!!!!) Pics Up!

The car has been needing work on a couple things for well over a year now. Everything from a timing chain job, to working on the headliner. Given the recent incident with a curb related suspension fuck-up, I've decided to start working on the car and, dare I say it.. "Restore" it. I made myself quite happy with it after putting rear-disc brakes on and I want to be happy with the whole car again. Even the radio and some of the interior may get worked up a bit.

I got some goodies from a local parts yard and will be using what I can. Everything from Sprint Springs, and an SPS STB, to an SPS TB and possibly some goodies inside the motor. I'm pretty excited and I will post pictures of progress showing a mild build and rebuild of a run-of-the-mill car. Nothing too special, but something I'm having fun with!

I hate taking and uploading pictures, but I'll try to snap some shots when things of interest pop up!

      Re: 944's Saturn project: "REBUILD"

Ask me what you need pictures of, and I'll shoot 'em!

Quick update on the car. Nothing interesting to shoot at this point, but I did get the rear suspension on, with the white wheels. I'm liking the white wheel look, but I have a surprise color, I'm thinking of having them done in! You'll like it, I promise (think Subaru lol)

I'm also taking this time to rip up some of the interior to refinish. I haven't had a head-liner for about a year and a half, so I dropped the shell and will be refinishing that. What do you guys think of Alcantara? I have the bright tan interior, so I think that Alcantara would look smashing in there. I might even do the trim pieces and door cards as well (in spots, not all over!).

I will be doing my research on everything I do (as I always do) and complete my project/projects to the best of my abilities. I do not like half-assing!

          Re: 944's Saturn project: "REBUILD"

Almost done getting the front-end fixed up. And just got done fixing my computer. Now both my XP and Win 2000 drives work! As opposed to none lol.

Put the drop springs on, swapped out the sub-frame. Had to modify the lower rad supports. NOT DIRECT DROP-IN!!!. Not for a 1992 SL. Lower rad supports on the SL sit lower, more recessed than the 1g SC design. At least they did on this one. I can take pics to show.

Also swapped out the SL rack for an SC rack. Will be getting stainless lines from Tirerack and maybe some higher boiling brake fluid. That'll compliment my brakes for now.

Need to get the Kumho's swapped from the Old wheels to the new ones... And I need to paint the wheels. Will require stripping them. They are white now. Doesn't look bad IMO, but I wouldn't mind a darker bronze to compliment the darker green of the car.

Pics will be up soon. Gotta bolt up the suspension and do some wiring.

Now the car is back on it's suspension and I'm just bolting things up. Tomorrow I'm cashing my paycheck and getting fluids for it. Should be drivable by Monday. Hope to take it out on Sunday evening. I'm gonna quadruple check errthang!

Tires are flat and it's a shitty pic (and that guy is a total tool), but you get the idea. Shit's Lowwwww....

              Re: "REBUILD" *NEED HELP*

              UPDATE:

Car rolls. But not under it's own power. Attempting to track down a possible ground-out issue that keeps blowing the fuel injector fuse under the hood. Annoying. Have checked most wires and re-tightened a few. Keeps eating up my 7.5 amp fuses. Will get "out of driveway" victorious pic soon!

Re: Project "REBUILD" (IT RUUUUUNS!!!!) New pics

So far I've diagnosed the fuel injector short problem. Had the power wire to injector 2 pinched in between the TB cable bracket and the intake manifold, when I bolted everything back together. It didn't sever any wires, only flattened it a bit, so I just taped it up and put everything back together. A little jump-start and it was up and running!

I've got most of the trim torn out, and the headliner shell is out right now as well. I'm going to reupholster the shell in alcantara (beige/tan) and probably embellish the Saturn logo somehow. till playing with ideas! (suggestions welcome)

I get a weird burning smell if I drive the car a bit. Seems to really get bad if I flail on it. Not sure what it is. I'm convinced it's plastic or rubber but I can't track it. Even if I leave the car running, the smell disappears after a minute, so tracking it has been annoying.

I'm also getting a rubbing noise. Like the brake pad noise makers that alert you if the pads are low. Only I've had these pads for less than a year's driving time, and I clipped the noise makers off. So That noise and the smell may be correlated. Not sure yet.

Other than that and the alignment (which it should get on Thursday) it drives fine. A little bouncy, but I'm looking into new struts to help with that. Fairly certain these are close to blown!

As you can see, I had a little fun with the front-end there, and put some trim shit on. To be honest, it actually looks kinda cool. I might keep it. If I decide it's gh3y, then all I have to do is yank it off.

Still working on the car, and taking pictures as I go!

Looking good. And the trims not bad. Do you get the smell when you hear the noise? Is the smell inside the passenger compartment or the engine bay or outside? When are you hearing the noise, only while moving, certain speed/rpm, time after starting etc. Random guess would be is the heat shield still on the entire underside of the car? Exhaust could be bumping underside and melting some plastics or rubbers or are you tires rubbing the wheel wells at all, its dropped and tires are very flat, but need more details.

Okay! Turns out the burning smell was a Walmart bag that sucked itself to the cat... and it's just been burning off. Relief!!! Just gotta look into the other stuff.

I still haven't figured out what's up with the noise. It's definitely my brakes though. Here's the weird thing. It's like the pad is barely touching the rotor, so it kinda sings a little. Just makes that high-pitched noise. If I put just a LEEEEETLE pressure on the pedal, the noise goes away.

I wonder why the pads wouldn't be seating on the rotors very well... Aside from the fact that the car was sitting for 6 months...

How old are the pads rotors? Maybe rotor needs to be resurfaced or replaced. May have warped.

                          NEW/LATE ASS UPDATE!!!

Been driving the car daily for about a year straight now. Have new tires on it (all/weather Falkens). Got all the white wheels on the car so everything matches. I'm still planning on cleaning the rims up so I have a polished/painted theme going on.

Someone busted my Driver's side mirror off, so I am currently stripping my passenger mirror and a donor, for semi-gloss black, which will match some of the exterior trim that I'm repainting.

Fashion lip 1.0 didn't live through the snow. It got pretty torn up (like Kimbo on Christopher Reeve, bad). So I'm gonna go back to Lowe's and get some more garage door trim for a second try. It should work out pretty well!

I finally upholstered all the upper trim, and the headliner in Microsued. Some of the adhesive isn't holding so I'm going to go back over it, before I take pictures for you.

I promise when I upload pics, you will all love it!

Oh, also... I rebuilt the radio harness (after the last break-in) and put a new Pioneer HD head unit in. Hell yes.
