• 97 SL2 N/A build

Ok, so I've been working on this project since the end of May 2006 right after I graduated high school. I am only going N/A with my car right now, I may juice up in the future and/or just supercharge but I have other things to worry about right now so that may be awhile.

Re: 97 SL2 N/A build

I know I'm gonna get flamed and such but I would like to hear feed back from you guys (and girls) about my build. When this semester is over I will be taking pictures of the car but currently have no time being that I have other projects to work on. Also, I have to figure out someway to open the hood up because my hood latch cable snapped on me last year, causing me to get pissed off and say "FUCK IT". Which was then followed by me pulling the car from the road and putting my Ex on the road.

Motor
-'02 Block bored .020
-'95 Crank turned .020
-SDA SCAT Forged Rods
-DOHC Hyperutectic Pistons (.020)
-SDA Stage 2 N/A Head with Hi-Flow valves
-Hastings Piston Rings
-Timing Kit from SDA
-Melling Oil Pump
-Clevite 77 Main and Rod Bearing set

Drivetrain
-Phantom Grip LSD - Quaffie or bust, if you're going to "fix" the tranny, do it in a way that you can be sure isn't going to blow up.
-Spec Lightweight Flywheel - Meh. I'd spend money on other things first. You could always get a few pounds shaved off the stock one.
-Short Throw Shifter - Make sure not to over spend on this, members of the board make quality ones for a good value

For Maintenance
-Rebuild all 4 Calipers
-Repaint all 4 Calipers (didn't prep good enough the first time) - Depending on color matching it can be okay.. at least you didn't say 2 calipers and 2 drums..
-SS Brake Lines - Watch eBay, they showed up for $60 or so lately
-Replace Rear Sway Bar Brackets & End Links

Extras;
- Replace that stock cat with something the same size as your exhaust
- Remove all non-stock lights.. please.
- Where's the nitrous kit??? You'll be disappointed with all the money you drop into it, for the results you get. Might as well make some real power on the juice.

Anywho, there ya go. You asked for it. haha

Nitrous + intake + exhaust
And make it look pretty
Best bang for the buck in the least amount of time

Re: 97 SL2 N/A build

Ok, thank you guys for the input. Thats what I was looking for cause I have trouble with prioritizing and wanted the opinion from some experienced guys of the Saturn field.
In response:

-I forgot to update the build but I had changed my mind on the LSD a week or so ago to going with the Quaife.....I just need to find out where to get them other than SMS

-I'll ask around for the short throw

-I really did a piss poor job on prepping the front calipers and I still haven't touched the rears, it was a work in progress on the road until the hood cable went on me

-the 100 watt lights between the head lights are going to stay (at least for now) -cause of the shitty road lighting situation on where my normal driving takes me, and yes I could go another route but that would add more time and miles on my trips, and with gas what it is I would rather not do either

-Finally but defiantly not least, the nitrous: I will be hooking up a nitrous system next year, I wanna get the car and motor set where I want it before I do that. Not to mention, I want to really sucker my buddies into losing money at the local drag strip by placing wagers AFTER I install the kit (without them knowing....obviously)

Nice plans man... I like to see concrete plans like that. I always wanted to try out Sda's heads... Id also love to have the money to do so... Lol... How are those aerospeed drop springs on the performance front?

Re: 97 SL2 N/A build

I regret to say right now that all this work that was planned out for this car this summer is going to be postponed to at least this upcoming winter, if not next summer due to the fact that I will be shipping off to boot camp for the US Marine Corps this Wednesday the 28th. Thank you for the advice and comments so far and hope to see more feedback when I come home for a 10 day leave period on Aug 22nd before Infantry school.

Re: 97 SL2 N/A build

Ok so, things have changed and I never went to boot camp like I wanted to. I got back to working and here's an update to my project:

What I have done:

Motor
-'02 Block bored .020
-'97 Crank turned .010
-SDA SCAT Forged Rods
-DOHC Hyperutectic Pistons (.020)
-SDA Stage 1 N/A Head with Hi-Flow exhaust valves, 1st gen flat face intake valves
-Hastings Piston Rings
-Timing Kit from SDA
-Melling Oil Pump
-Clevite 77 Main and Rod Bearing set

What I have still to do:

Drivetrain
-Short Throw Shifter

For Maintenance
-Replace Rear Sway Bar Brackets & End Links

For Fun
-4 High conversion
-High Output Headlight Harness
-Undercar LED's
-Tint - 35% front, 20% rear

What will be done over time:

Drivetrain
-Quaife LSD
-Spec Lightweight Flywheel

For Maintenance
-Replace and paint all 4 Calipers (didn't prep good enough the first time)
-SS Brake Lines

For Fun
-OEM Fog Lights
-Black housing Headlights
-4300K HID High Beams
-SL1 Trunk Panel
-Strip and Fill Emblems

That is as she is currently. I have all that I need, accept time, so I am still assembling the motor but will hopefully be completing that this week as well as drop it in and get it rolling.
