  • Rhd sc2

After some time with the RHDSL1 ( https://forum.sixthsphere.com/forum/...s/48099-rhdsl1 ) I've decided to build a RHDSC2 instead. The RHDSL1 was actually 2 cars (SWP and SL1) welded front to back. I bought it that way cheap for temporary use and it appears to have been a very well done custom job, but in the end it's 2 cars welded together and that bothers me enough not to drive it.

Recently I bought a 2002 SC2 with under 96k miles in extremely good condition optioned out the way I wanted and very minimal rust so the plan is to convert it to RHD.

I intend to strip the necessary components from the SL1 such as the dash, subframe, steering rack, pedal assembly, and inner firewall and move them over to the SC2 instead.

The SL1 was an automatic transmission and that's how the pedal assembly was setup. The SC2 is a manual transmission. I will be following this guide for the "swap" https://forum.sixthsphere.com/forum/...g-saturn-parts

I also have a low mileage (~42k i think ) 2G DOHC engine that I will pair up with a 91/92 OEM header.

I have VUE dash to swap and will also install an oil pressure gauge with a double DIN dash kit with a single din radio with a 52mm 2 or 3 gauge display in the other spot.

So I pulled the RHDSL1 into the garage to start the teardown. The plan is to remove the engine/trans (almost done minus oil drain & removal as of this post) and push it out into the driveway. Then I will remove the subframe for cleanup and reuse and use a torch to cut the front clip off and affix it to some dollies. This way before I do any modification to the SC2 I can measure it and mark it all appropriately.

From there I will dispose of the carcass of the old car somehow. I'm thinking right now that I can strap it to the tow dolly as a place that takes car shells is conveniently nearby.

Finished removing the engine/trans from the SL1 last night. Pushed it outside the garage to start the strip of the stuff I'm keeping and plan the disposal of the remaining rear portion of the shell.

Here is the car the swap is going into. A 2002 Saturn SC2 with ~96k miles on it. Overall decent shape but several small cracks in panels I will address later and minimal rust that I will address at the time of this swap as I plan to remove every panel and do a thorough inspection and rust prevention/removal.

Manual transmission which will be a major portion of the swap getting the third pedal in the wall on that side but it's been done before.

It has black cloth interior in good shape minus a small tear on the traditional driver side which will become the passenger side so a good simple sewing repair should be enough since it will see far less use on that side going forward.

              Interior and windshield removed.

Planning to start cutting the car up tonight and hope to scrap the shell tomorrow.

Going to cut out a section with about a foot on each side of the firewall and keep it mounted to furniture dollies so I can compare and measure before I cut into the new shell.

Keeping the subframe off the front section too.

I cut a frame up a similar way for my fabrication jig, ended up cutting to the rear of the box you drew there a little ways into the door opening. The way the A-pillars are made from multiple folds of steel made using a cutting torch rather messy with the blow through, ended up using a sawsall on the other side for a much cleaner cut. Most of the floorboard went well with the torch as I recall.

I made a convertible SC2 many years back by cutting the roof off so I've done the rear pillars before. I cut the roof off my SW2 before scrapping it too but it was too flimsy to drive.

Did you actually drive the convertible sc2? Got any pics of it done? And what do you mean when you say it was to flimsy. Asking because I am going to be cutting the top out of my 96 sc2 and I'm debating if I just want to cut the skin and leave the structure, or if I wanna cut it all off.

I drove it but there was a definite flex to it. I only did it to the car because I had always wondered what it would be like and because I was going to be stripping it for parts for my (at the time) 2001 SC2 which needed things it had. We welded in a cross/roll bar but that didn't help any. You could just definitely tell it was a death trap. I did the same thing to my wagon but was sketched out when the folding frame wouldn't let the doors open/close on their own well.. I would have considered welding in more support but storing it was also an obstacle at the time

Haha that's pretty sweet. Wonder if welding the doors shut would help with the flex. Who needs doors with no top, right?

The wagon was being disposed of because it was a rusted out POS or I'd have considered it.

Cut it in (almost) half today. Someone is coming to take the rear section in a couple of days and then I'll trip down the section I'm keeping.

I will take the subframe off and lower it onto dollies and cut it back to around the strut towers. The front section is light enough that you can maneuver it around with the help of another person.
