  • "Rev Limiter" while driving...

    Car: 2002 SL1 Manual.

When I first got he vehicle the speedometer and odometer weren't working (figured VSS crapped out or wiring was buggered up, easy fix.) Turns out it was just unplugged... Plugged in and all is well and seemingly accurate. Note: SES light works and is NOT on.

Anyways, I noticed driving it home (sensor unplugged) it hit 4k rev limiter (Duh, Just was goofing around with the car, figured it would be fixed when I fixed VSS.) Went for test drive after plugging sensor in and the car still does it. All gears from 1st to 3rd it hits 4k rpm and it won't go higher. Not that I'm trying to race this ultra high performance machine but I' like to test to make sure everything is Kosher.

Since then (For maintenance and shear fact the car was beat to hell) I have done some PM stuff such as full tune up (plugs, wires, PCV valve), fuel filter, oil change, replaced TAM, VCG, O2 sensor, Air filter, and cleaned throttle body (Was probably never done in its 141k mile life.) Car runs a lot better. Not that I thought that stuff would have fixed the limiter problem. Just running through the car's basic operations.

Any clues as to what could be going on?

    Sam? LOL!

Yes sir. Disconnected battery for a good bit while working on it. Same deal.

Do the manual cars have a "neutral" switch in them on trans? I don't really recall I know there is a clutch switch. All this Toyota knowledge I acuired made me forget a crap load of stuff about the s-cars... It's been nearly 5 years since I even touched one. LOL!

If that was the case then anybody who has their switch jumped/by passed wouldn't be able to go over 4k... Mine was by passed in my 98 with no such issue. That's just a "clutch" switch. Car starts just fine.

The clutch switch shouldn't have anything to do with it.

                    Negative.

I'm honestly stumped. I've been thinking about it and can't come to any type of conclusion.

Was the car an auto at any point?

Drain the trans fluid, if it is filled with metal shavings it's the diff.

Is it bouncing on a limier or does it just reach a point to can't go past? If the later then I would think its possible a clogged cat.

Yeah it's starting to act like it. Won't go past 3800 and it starts to surge or "hick ups" a bit. Car is lacking power as well (Besides it being a factory 9 bolt single cam.) LOL!

Haven't been able to drive car very much until today. Revs up decently at stand stil... Would the precat being clogged cause same issues sam? I'd like to only replace one thing as they do get pricey...
