  • Mad idle

I changed the head on my 93 sc2 with a 96 and there are a few things i noticed... There is an extra sensor that plugs into the head on the 93, what do i do about it? Also, the egr doesn't fit on the head. And finally I tried to start it anyway and it idles at like 4000rpm and shits out extreme amounts of smoke. Any ideas/thoughts?

theres nothing you can do with the egr other than block it off. You need to drill and tap the head for the extra sensor. Or splice it into one of the hoses or something. And the idle, sounds like you have a vacuum leak. Most likely your vacuum style egr valve that doesn't have a spot on the 96 head.

also, what injectors are you using? The 96's, or the 93's?

cause you HAVE to use the 93's

Pretty much what he said. lol

-Block off the vacuum lead for your old egr.
-Block off the egr mounting plate with either a piece of steel plate, or get a used linear egr and bolt it up with two quarters underneath it.
-About the extra sensor, i dont remember the exact thread, but what it pretty easy to do, is drill/ tap the upper rad hose nipple on the head. i will get pics of mine if you need help.

Pics would be wonderful. I am using the egr from the 96, is that ok as a block-off?

I am using the injectors from the 93.

Yeah, use the 96 egr and put 2 quarters under it.

make sure you attached the brake booster vacuum line...i missed that and mine idled at like 4000 rpms...you know the hose on the back of the intake....and werent the coolant temperature sensor and switch combined to one sensor in 96? and the egr you will have to block off...just my two cents lol

ding ding ding. we have a wiener!!!!111!!! yeah nut job, they switched to one coolant sensor in 96, but he specifically said that the 96 head was going on a 93. 93s have TWO coolant sensors. Swapping heads doesnt mean you can simply ditch a CTS. soo, you have to tap a hole in the head, or put a piece of pipe in the upper rad hose and tap that.

The old egr was hooked to something with a knob on it... the 96 egr only has a sensor input. I don't need anything for that do i?

you need to block off the line, or switch the vacuum lines for a cali reg 94 (they have 2 instead of three lines) without blocking it, all it will do is leak. so with the 96 egr on the head and two quarters under it, leave the 93 egr solenoid plugged in so you dont throw a code. then clip the egr line (black, hard plastic) about 2" from the tree on the TB. Then slide an appropriately sized vacuum cap over it. That completes the vacuum issue.

i think, if i read right, no, you dont do anything special with the 96 egr except put two quarters under it and bolt it down.

What exactly is the brake booster vacuum line? I can't find it, it might already be on again.

I put the quarters under the egr. I haven't bothered with the coolant sensor yet because i doubt thats whats making the car idle so high...
Any other ideas because I can't figure it out yet.

the brake booster line is the thick vacuum line that goes from the back of the IM to the brake booster.

and Maybe I missed it, but do you still have the old egr plugged into the vacuum tree? If not what did you do with the spare line?

So...my old vacuum lines got destroyed when I removed the 93 head. So I got some in the junk yard from 94 sc2 with only two lines. The third one is blocked off. One line goes behind the IM where I think the brake booster line is also plugged in. The other line goes to the FPR. I still have the solenoid from the 93 EGR plugged in. I am using te 2 quarters and the new EGR to block off. The engine still goes straight to 4k. Is there something else I am missing.?
