  • Removing Axles Help...

It's been a bit since I last pulled an engine, and I've only done it on the 94 before. This time, I'm pulling the 98 motor, and I'm trying to get the passenger side out. Any tips on where to pry? I can't get anything effective enough to pop it out.

    Thanks,
    -Rob

I just put a board or something on the CV outter joint and hit the fuck outta it with a hammer to pop it out of the C-clip thingy.

I take the camber bolts out of the strut...it lets you pull the knuck forward enought to get it out all the way....our you could deal with that little fucking cotter pin and the 18mm nut on the lower control arm....and then beat the piss outta the knuckle right by the ball joint to the the ball joint ot pop out enough to get the 18mm castel nut off all the way.

Also, there are three 15mm bolts over the intermediate shaft bearing. once you have the axle off, you can take that out pretty easily, or leave it on and take it out with the engine and trans...but if you are gonna seperate the engine and trans, then you need to undo those three 15mm bolts. and remove the intermediate shaft.

you can install/remove axles by just removing the strut to knuckle bolts? I tried this and never had enough clearance.. it was close, but not enough. I've always had to remove the lower control arm bolt.

                ...

I've got the strut/knuckle bolts off, and I'm trying to separate the intermediate shaft from the axle (I think it is), so I can pull the ending and trans out along with the intermediate shaft. I didn't want to pull on the CV joints, since I figured they're kind of delicate. Is this assumption incorrect? If not, I'll just do like Sam said and pound the shit out of it towards the strut direction. And the outer CV is the one closest to the wheel, right?

                Thanks,
                -Rob

I couldn't get my driver's side axle out. I needed a bigger crowbar and all was well.

You can compress the CV joints, just don't stretch or pull on em too hard. Pry that shit out.

WHen I said outer, I was referring to the outter round caseing of the inner CV joint....not the outer joint.

Yes you can just remove the camber bolts...on the driver's side you need to pull down hard to get just enough clearance. It you arew a wuss, you may need a pry bar between the cradle and sway bar to pull down that little bit more that you need

                      ...

Well, I ended up just taking the intermediate shaft off the block. It then came out of the trans with a tug of my hand. The driver's side took a bit of levering, but came out, as well. Yay. Pulling tomorrow is planned.
