    what would make an alternatorish screaming noise other than the alternator?

    Water pump? I can think of a whole bunch of other things too. Power steering, oil pump, problem behind the crank pulley....der......

      power steering pump OR bad belt tensioner, the idler can too.

                    Go faster in reverse. IDK what you drive, but I know all the manuals will whine if you start goin 5-10mph in reverse.

                        My power steering sounded like that. It was cool cuz the sound would get louder/quieter with RPM
