  • OBDI engine in a 96 quetions

Well i purchased a 95DOHC engine with the intention of swapping it into my 96SL which is starting to leak and burn some oil.

I talked with JW and Teb on Sunday about it, but I just want to make sure and see if anyone has done this before..

Other than swapping PCMs for a DOHC PCM (still OBDII though...) I'm going to swap the sensors. Anything else I should know?

the fuel system i believe is different and your 95 has 2 sensors in the head. one kicks the fan on. the other is your temp guage. ummmm, oh yeah, the sensors from your 96 needs to be installed in the 95, the harnesses are different. ummmmm, i dunno ,i've done it before just cant think straight right now.

the ones in the head are the coolant temp sensor and the switch.....and are you switching both the block and the head or are you sticking with your 96?

IIRC, I swapped the sensors off my 97 engine and I don't believe that I had to change any of the pigtails/harness. Other than that it had the electronic EGR so no change there and I mounted up my IM with the fuel rail and injectors from the 97 onto the 95 engine. Been driving fine since august, although I twitch all the time when I drive it. Leave a sensor in the second hole on the head and use one of them for your ECTS.

You should be fine. Just look at the sensor pigtails and the EGR and make sure they are correct.

hmm dont they have a mod for the fan switch....cuz if they do you can attach that pigtail to the coolant temp sensor and mod the switch to an actual switch (which might be better anyways)....that was my biggest concern cuz you cant just not plug in a sensor or plug the hole because there is a reason that hole is there...good luck

Interesting, I was just thinking about this myself.

I am pondering a 93 DOHC into a 98 car. I forgot about the injectors, so I guess I need to swap the fuelrails. So after that is just swapping the '98 sensors inplace of the 93 ones and it sounds like she's ready. All of my Saturns have been OBD1 so this is all new to me.

From what I can remember, it is not that bad. Check the EGR, change fuel rails and injectors to return style and high impedance. Examine sensors, install, add fluid, start. Done. I am probably missing something but I just did this a while ago. The plastic fuel rails will fit on the earlier IM, just that only one bolt holds it there. Whatev's, I'm not F/I yet so I don't have to worry about it blowing back out..

Yup, then I have to contend with the longer wheelbase, so that means a new set of ebrake cables (disc) from a second gen and a new battery cable, since mine is relocated to the trunk.
