  • transmission problems? help! please

Help... My Sc 2 2000 1.9 DOHC saturn automatic transmission i believe is having problems. My symptoms are when I have it in park and neutral I hear what sounds like a bearing noise or maybe metal scraping... Sometimes I hear it and sometimes I don't but when I put it in drive reverse the noise goes away. I have no problems shifting at all the fluid is red like it should be. This has just started and I have no used the car since fearing more damage.... I have 156,000 miles on my Saturn and no major problems at all Help what do I do is it really the transmission or not we listened to the transmission housing with a stethoscope and I could hear what sounded like pebbles grinding. Help please. Thank you I hope everyone is doing well sorry its been such a while for posting I wish it was a more positive post I was posting.
    Thank you
    David

    Diff pin scraping the housing?

Doesn't sound too promising. Do you race it/beat on it/do burnouts? If so, start looking for a new transmission.

I have been told it was some kind of washer that falls off the TAAT transmissions which sounds like a defect....

How would a diff pin be making noise when its it park or nuetral?

I would suspect an input shaft bearing or shaft play when the tension is not not being applied.

Could also be the flexplate haveing a loose bolt on the torque convertor, or a cracked flex plate. BUt if that was the case, I would think it would do it in gear too.

          You got a few options.

*Pull you tranny, and put a new, used one in.

*Pul your tranny and rebuild it.

          * Drive it until failure and put a new, used trans in.

yah i would choose option 3, drive it until you cant drive anymore and then get it replaced or if not get it looked at by a tranny shop my old auto pos i didnt have 2nd gear or reverse (this was auto) and it only cost me 600 bux to have a junkyard tranny installed.

or could do it yourself all it is a simple drop and swap.

my buddy has a 2000 sc2 and his auto died on him like 3 times cause of syncro's we eneded up just putting a manual tranny in it and that solved his problem.

i can get him to chime in when he gets around but just best idea is to drive it until you start losing gears then go from there.

Thanks well I don't want the damage to be too bad I got an estimate from a friend we have knows since i was 16 at his shop and he said he would fix it for around 1800 to 2500 but the more you use it the more damage you do to it. Thank god for my 94 integra with 191,000 might I add lol and an automatic transmission with no problems I will b using her till this gets fixed. If he rebuilds everything I may go that way it should be around 1,800. Me and my dad are gonna get the details tommorow and I can post when I get home to let you know what he thinks. They will do a pan drop to check for shavings i can't see any from the stick like i said it looks bright red. We first thought it was the alternator but that was changed and it still was there. Then we did the stethiscope and I heard that noise. Its not really noisy at all but I assume will get worse..

It might be the reverse nut backing out. Does the car ever slam into reverse? That nut likes to back off and scrape the cover making a sound like that. You can check it buy pulling the end cover off the tranny.

hey chrispel thank you for the reply no the transmission shift fine really smoooth. And the 1800 would b a total rebuild i have seen transmission for sale out of wrecked cars go for like 4 to 500 and if i have the same problem again i figure i might as well rebuild it so basically i'd have a new car b/c my engine is in great shape. I dunno i'll get the complete details tommorow on it. I just wonder if its a defect...
