  • Knocking

I just got 93 sc2 and there is a sharp knocking noise coming from the engine.
I figured it was a stuck valve spring but I'm not sure. It has 150+k on it, it runs great except for the noise. It doesn't seem to be very consistent, it'll quite down and it'll skip a few beats some times too.

Also, I took off the wires to change the spark plugs and they were soaked in oil. Should i just change the cam cover gasket or change the cam cover itself? I have a 97 plastic cover as a possible replacement if necessary(are they interchangeable?).

The cam cover is will work, and is suppose to seal better. Just get a new gasket for it so you know that is good, and put a dab of silicone where the timing cover meets the head.

The knocking noise couldbe a few things. You need to be more specific. Front of engine? left? Only under heavy acceleration, idle??? We need more details.

The noise is all the time. It sounds like it would be coming from the cams. I don't know if it could be coming from the timing chain... is it possible?

Its possible. WHen you pull the cam cover off, check tosee if the top timing chain guide is there, or at least that the plastic guide is there.

You could be hearing lifter noise. Check the oil and if its low, add until you are at the proper level.

If it is at the porper leave, you could have a stuck or collapsed lifter. Add about 16oz of ATF and let it high idle (about 1200rpm) for about 15-20. If the noise isn;t gone by then, then you have a porblem and need a new lifter, or you are hearing rod knock.

ROd knock will put silver shit in the oil, so drain the oil and look for silvery swirls.

ATF is a mild detergent. It will help clean out the crap that is stuck in the lifters, and is thiner, so it will pump up into the lifters easier.

I fixed it today. It was the top timing chain guide that is hooked to the camshaft bearing caps. The plastic on it was broken off and the metal was rubbing against the chain. Thanks for the help.

If it comes back, could be a stretched belt, lose idler pulley, or bad tensioner.

New belt is being put on monday and the tensioner has already been replaced.
