  • Pinion knocked a hole in the transmission case?

We had a major transmission problem this summer. The pinion shaft some how knocked a hole in the case and caused all the fluid to dump out as we drove. It's a 5 speed too.

Anyone else have this problem? Our car is a second owner, now has 125K on it and is a very good car. We never heard anything, no noise, just a trail of royal purple that I had put in not long ago.

We had it fixed at Saturn since they have always been fair with us. They knocked half of the labor off the bill!

    Diff pin FTL.

Does this car ever get driven "spiritedly"?

I do drive it hard some times. What is FTL? I haven't driven it hard for some time though.

FTL means For The Loss... its a nerd thing... and it sounds like the diff pin. You do burnout or launches at all? If you do or did then you probably loosened it up and then, well...

yes this is a very common problem with saturn transmissons. the diff pin failure is usually due to driving the car hard.

you correct this problem by welding the diff pin in to place . you then proceed to go and beat the piss out of the new tranny

lol you prolly can now ...... but the case is fucked. You need a new transmission. Or AT LEAST a new case and a new differential ...... ie a new transmission

                lol edit ....... SIGGED

okay people READ!!!! he had the blown diff trans replaced with a new one. he was asking if he could now weld the pin in place with the replaced trans.

its common. but also common with other makes and models of vehicles. you beat up on a stock diff, your going to pay the price in about in vehicle. and yes other then the little roll pin blowing out, the trans are pretty stout.

and no, you cant weld the diff without pulling it apart. its not a hard task to do

Is the pin the cross pin in the diff? Crap. I will just drive it nice until I buy the wife another car.

                          This is the pin:

You can get rid of the diff pin by replacing it with w Quaife LSD diff its only about $1200. Good luck finding one used. Oh yea don't bother with a phantom grip. Junk.
