  • Intake Manifold Removal

The other day i pulled of my TB b/c i was considering boring it out. I notice that there was a shit load of carbon built up on it ( 1/8" thick around the hole) Then I looked at the intake manifild and saw the same amount of buildup. (1/8" thick around the hole) Im sure this has to cause some kind of performance loss.. My question(s) is/are:

    1) how hard is it to remove the intake manifold so i can clean it out?? I shouldn't have to pull the motor to get at it should i??

2)If pulling the engine is required, is there a way to clean it while it is on there without completely gumming up my injectors?? I dont have a lift or any of the required stuf for pulling the engine

    Thanks Guys

not worth it. You need to remove most of the mounts so you can pull the engine forward enough to get the manifold to clear the studs and firewall. You'll also need a ratch strap to hold the engine forward while you're trying to get it off. You won't be able to get it sparkly clean, but just use some TB cleaner. Spray it on in there, start the car and spray some more in.

OK, I wasnt sure about how to go about cleanign it with it still on there. I figured with the large amount of pasty buildup tht is on there i would probably gum up the injectors and send myself into a big problem.

So All i have to do is spray some Carb Cleaner in there, let it sit for a bit, start the car up, and then spray some more cleaner in there?? And it shouldnt hurt the motor?

shoudln't but if you use too much you can flood the poor thing

seafoam works well, just can't pour it in too fast, cleans most of it out too.

If i was to go the Seafoam route, would i just leave the tb on and start the car up and somehow funnel it in there?? i figured the spray would coat the whole surface better because it is floating in the air. I know how to use the carb cleaner slowly b/c ive done it on my snowmobile before. Thanks again guys.

if you use carb cleaner there's a lot you'll never get to in there. seafoam foams up when it gets into the manifold if I remember right. I think you pour it in through the pcv slowly

Ok, thanks Vinny. I found myself a guide on the net on how to use the seafoam. http://www.mx6.com/forums/archive/index ... 87411.html If this is the proper way to do it, then tht is what im going to do. I'm familiar with seafoam and i know it is bad ass stuff, just didnt know how to use it in the intake. Thanks again

right you want to use the PCV to feed it in. you can try the "slurping" technique as mentioned, should work about the same and be easier to regulate.
