• oil question.

what's a good oil for my 97asc2. engine has roughly 55,000 miles on it. it's a swap from the last motor that died. it does burn oil. i think all saturns do. i was wondering if high mileage oil will work better than synthetic oil. and... if i swap to synthetic is it jus like changing my oil the regular way or do i have to flush it all out. thx

I run 20W50 Valvoline durablend (synthetic/ conventional blend). Car has 200+ compression and 0-3% leak down in all cylinders. btw car has 162,000 miles on it.
2002 Saturn SL1- 5 speed, basic, slow, and staying that way.
1993 Lexus SC300- Project turning into gold...

Formerly knows as "Saturntuner05."
Too many past turds to list.

no...... do NOT run straight 20w50 unless you want insane oil pressure problems, I've experienced this on other cars before, as well as my Saturns. run 1qt, to 1.5qts of 20w50, the rest, straight 5w30.

Don't get no fancy oil either, it's really not worth it if you're burning oil.

Running straight 20w-50 is not recommended on an engine designed for 5w-30. Good luck starting it if the temp drops a wee bit too much. The lifters will stay pumped up and you won't have any compression

That's why I said for him to run 1-1.5qts 20w50 if at all. It's better than tossing Lucrap in there (yes, ya'll changed my mind on that shit.)

lol correct you are sir.

I would recommend 10w30, and ialso use Durablend as well. If you want to spend more money and give your engine a "treat", I recommend Engine Restore 4 Cylinder formula, and Valvoline Full Synthetic Syn Power

I too run 10W30. I use plain old Valvoline and will switch to synthetic when the other motor is done since my bottom end has 310k plus and the piston rings are shot so I use it.

I also add the Engine Restore as well and it has helped get the old engine down the road, especially with the nitrous treatment.

its a personal choice. any car ive had, i run a conventional in it a few times and change it more often the needed. then i switch to full synthetic. i will run mobil 1, penzoil, quaker state, and my favorite royal purple. i also typically run 10w30 in summer and 5w30 in winter. 01+ vehicles i have put in 5w20. now turbo, id run a 10w40/15w40.

Ya'll say ya'll in Michig? I thought it was a south thing. Anywho, my '94 engine has 314,590 miles on it. Yeah, she smokes a little bit when you crank her up, but manage to take alot of ricers down. My 2 cents is this: I just recently switched to higher mileage engine oil and I can't say enough about it. Oil burnoff has been cut in half and the old dohc seems to run a bit quieter and smoother. I have never used any oil treatments like STP or RESTORE so I cannot comment.
