  • what is "clutch creak"????

this happened a while ago, and i got to thinkin about it, and i realized i still have no fuckin clue what the guy was talking about.

last fall some warranty work was done on my 05 ion to replace the entire clutch pedal assembly for "clutch creaking" as the work invoice said. now then...WTF is this?

at the time i didn't know, nor did i care. the service manager had driven my car around after an oil change and said that the clutch was creaking and that it needed to be replaced. i asked if it was warranty work, he said yes, so i told him to do it, and to tell the idiot car wash guy to rewash my car.

but i just want somebody to explain to me what "clutch creaking" is.

Sounds like they where slow and they dipped into warranty fraud.

Creaking is a noise when you pressure the pedal in. Some creaks won't go away when you lubricate the assmebly.

eh, i dunno about the fraud part. all i know is that my clutch pedal assembly is about 6 months less old than the rest of the car. and it still makes that noise that the old one did so... *shrugs*

Are you kiddin? Shops do that all the time, especially when it's slow. It allows them to make money and the customer does not care because the repair is under warranty so it's no money out of pocket.

I have seen it done many times.

i've heard about it, but like i said, i dunno if that's what happened in my case...though it does sound like it. but also like i said and you said, i don't care.

but if they wanted to do warranty fraud, why'd they spring for the clutch pedal, when 2 days before that i'd been in there with what i thought was a synchro issue in my tranny.

oh well, it was last year anyways, so i doubt it matters much anymore

have someone press the pedal in for you and find the joint thats creaking.. there might be a rubber fitting over the joint pull that back and spray it with some wd-40 or the like

On the Ion, the clutch assembly is i.e. pedal, and lever are plastic. There's a good possiblity that the plastic lever is rubbing against the metal mount under the dash. Take a look and see then try like some moly lube or silicon grease or something. Like the grease shit inside the shifter area. I'm not sure how porous the plastic is so I dunno what effect WD40 will have on it.

                  Mine creaks too...oh well

Technically, if you hear a rattle or creak, and the customer mentions NOTHING about it, you are suppose to leave it allow...You are not suppose to up sell warranty items....AT ALL. If GM found out about it...LOL All the warranty stuff form like the last 6 monthes will not be payed by GM...the cost will fall in the hands of the dealership.

Now, if you find a satey item OR you find that something like the rear main seal is leaking really bad, then you should report it before it gets worse....its a fine line. And to me, it sounds the the service manager was on the wrong side of the thin line.

yeah, safety items i can understand, cause that'd just be the dealership covering it's own ass from a lawsuit if something did happen. but after what i've read in this thread, i'm thinking i shouldn't have ended up with a new pedal. kinda makes me wonder about the 4 MAF's, 2 ECM's, air filter and a few other things.... :? )

and as for not mentioning squeaks or rattles...perhaps i could refer you to the fact that he's a service manager at a SATURN dealership? i think the cars are designed to rattle and squeak.
