  • MYSTERY CLUNK SHENANIGANS!

Over the course of a month or so I discovered a mystery clunk when I would turn the wheel approx. 10 - 20* left or right while going in a straight line. CV JOINTS you cry? Nay nay buttercup. Put little red up on the lift and investigated. CV's are in perfect condition, no play, no clunk. So I started wiggling the steering wheel while on the lift and found some interesting shite. The actual steering mechanism is borked. The clunk you ask? Coming from INSIDE the car and transmitting down the shaft to the floor board, causing me to believe something more critical was in jeopardy.

Further investigation had me up under the dash and much to my chagrin, I discovered an oil leak coming from the electric assist gearbox. So I called Saturn of Boise and told them to FIX THEIR SHIT! Due to the fact that racing at the strip (straight lines and all) and the lowering/swaybar/STB CAN'T be a factor in the screwed-up-ness that is the Elec. Assist steering gearbox, I am taking it in on Sat.

USAF Troubleshooting for the fucking WIN!!! Gonna have them turn the rotors while they have it in too. BWUAHAHAHA.

intermediate shaft play is a common problem...there should be no dispute from your dealership with that one.

They also have a lube kit that may cure the noise. I'm sure they'll try that before replacing it.

It's not about the tranny Vin. The steering box is fuxxors. Or so it seems...if the problem persists they are going to be doing much much more.

They won't fuck with me...I'll break them in half with my mental willpower.

So just got back from SOB and guess what. No shenanigans on their part for the mods...just told me to get an alignment, even though it's had one.

Anyhow...the steering linkage WAS the culprit thru a worn intermediate shaft. The oil leaking was in an FSB since it had been identified they pulled it down, cleaned the oil and put it back in there. I pretty much told them what the deal was down to the parts they needed to look at.

Anyhow it was okay. No problems and she drives like a champ.
