• pulling transaxle out through the top

ok i thought i heard of someone pulling the transaxle through the top without messing with the engine or subframe, and i was wondering if anyone has done that? i come to find my new throwout bearing is shot, so if im digging into that im pulling the trans and welding the differential before i have no car to drive. hopefully i can figure out how to pull it from the top so i wont have to mess with the subframe. i also need a floor jack to get it skyward, should buy that aluminum one at summit.

im certain the bell housing comes off and somehow wiggles around and slips between the engine and the input shaft, then the trans should easily be pulled. im just going by looking at my pictures of my clutch job. doesnt seem easy but might as well try, i guess?

no, you can't pull the tranny out the top with the engine still in place. That doesn't work out.

I think that would be pretty tough with the engine in the way. I really don't see how someone did it.

More power to you if you did though.

yeah i was the one who took the tranny out the top, and im not blowing smoke out my ass. it took 2 of us to get it out just cuz of weight and awkwardness.

when i took it out i took off the upper rad hose obviously all the battery crap and your gonna have to do something with the ac hoses as well. this was on a base model sl i dunno about if yours has an abs unit or not, im not sure where the abs unit would be located.

the slave cylinder can be just moved out of the way of everything also. take the shifter cables off and also that linkage box thingy (not sure of actual name) off the tranny and i used paper towels to put in the opening just so i didnt get any crap into the tranny.

all the mounts have to come off the tranny too. pretty much strip it down bare. my friend and i just man handled the bastard till it came out. it took us pretty much a full day to take it out and put it back in from start to finish. so if you have some buddies helpin ya you should be able to get it done in a day, but put some buffer zone time in there in case something goes wrong.

i did do it so it is possible

I pulled it out the top also. I'm just saying it can be done. We had the car on a lift and if I remember correctly we had to loosen some cradle bolts. This is like 2 years ago and I dont remember the specifics. Out the top is the hard way to do it, I think, but I've only done it once. I'm a hyundai tech and when I pull trannys, I drop the cradle and pull the tranny out the bottom. So if I had to do the saturn again, I would drop it out the bottom.

Thake it out of the side. Loosen the passenger's side cradle bolts about 1 or 2 turns and take the ones on the driver's side completely out. Take the knuckle off the strut and remove the 3 nuts holding the top of the strut in to the frame. Remove strut and hang your brake caliper up in the strut mount location. The tranny comes right out. Phat Nutz and I had one out in 45 miutes that way.

If you want to take tranny out of the top, the easiest way is to leave the car on the ground. Remove the tranny bolts and grundle tray. Then place about 200-300 pounds of TNT under the car and run like hell.

DAMMIT, I did it the hard way then!

Hey Turbo, thats some cool info, is that really all you have to do, or is there a few things you left out? I'm not being sarcastic, I know you've gotta unbolt the tranny from engine, remove mounts, wires from connectors, shift cables and hydrolic clutch thing (brainfart), but is it really that simple?

well with an auto, you dont have to pull the input shaft out of the clutch. unbolt and torque converter from the flywheel, and pop her out. dont know which way you are talking about pulling it.

i dunno if i would suggest pulling if from the top, if you have a garage and some good jack stands and a decent tool kit, do it like these guys are saying, i was just limited on what i had for tools and what not, mostly jackstands i started using bricks towards the ends lol

drop the cradle man im sure its like 80% easier on you than the way i did it

well im still going to try it through the top, for shits and giggles or broken things . trust me, ive got too much time on my hands to be doing anything else. i spent time to replace a cd player in my other car, which i cant drive till i get the new plates and insurance, and i rewired it and cleaned up the wires. i also washed my car and filed my tax return.

i just want to go for it, anybody have a problem with me trying it since ive got nothing else to do? lets just say i find a quick way to do it and pop it out, wouldnt you like to know how its done quickly? not saying im going to do it quick or even do it, i just want to try since i know people have done it. otherwise im going to be on the internet a whole bunch, because there is nothing for me to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
