I've replaced the rear main without taking the tranny out. Just move it aside like if you were doing a clutch job.

yeah theres a decent amount of wrench room, arm room etc. if you can secure the tranny out of teh way so it doesnt work free and pound you in the wrist.

oh an i took a tranny out and put one back in with the engine cradle never beeing touched straight out the top and back in from the top. had to remove the upper rad hose and man handle it

A bad rear main will cause a leak. How ever, it won't cause you to have low oil pressure. Well, if you let enough oil leak out to where the oil pick up tube is starved from oil, then you would have oil pressure problems.

If the seal is leaking then go ahead and change it. But while you are back there, take notice to the oil galley plug that is behind the flywheel. Everyonce and awhile that galley plug will leak, and it is under pressure. So if it is leaking heavily, it WILL cause low oil pressure. Buy a new oil galley plug from the dealer, take the old plug out (8mm allen head), clean the threads in the block with brak cleaner, cover the threads of the new plur with red loctite, and then torque it down to about 25ft/lb (22 is spec).

if you just built the engine why did you leave the old rear main seal in there?

yeah the rear main can be replaced without pulling the trans. when i did my clutch job the rear main was leaking so i popped it off and replaced it. you can easily see the rear main in my pictures in the clutch swap topic just below this one. it was easy to do.

does it matter that my transmission is an automatic? cause i got the big ass torque converter in there..so its bigger than the 5 speed... this make any difference?

                        nope, shouldn't matter.

on occassion it does happen that new seals will be bad, happened to us on Monstah's first high-comp block, front and main both were bad and leaking like crazy.

Thank you. I swapped the rms exactly as the haynes manual described as the same way I had done before on my own. If you think it is something I did, check the fms as well since I did both.
