• Yet another tire thread...

Would I be a complete retard to use 195/60/R14's (Azenis RT-615) for autocross?

I have a bunch of 14"x6" VW wheels laying around, and being a Turd owner (read: cheap-ass), I'd rather use those than buy new wheels. So, I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons of that setup versus using, say Saturn "Sawtooth" wheels with 205/50/R15's:

Pros:

1. Cheaper (I already own the wheels, and the tires are $11 cheaper than the 15" size)

2. Lower inertia = faster accelration

The OD is the same for both tires (23.2")
The weight will be roughly the same for each combination
VW rim @ 16.5 lbs + 14" tire @ 18.7 lbs = 35.2 lbs
Turd rim @ 14.5 lbs + 15" tire @ 20.8 lbs = 35.3 lbs

3. Cheaper

Cons:

1. Lower effective spring rate due to increased sidewall (made even worse by my limp-ass springs)

2. One inch less tread width (6.6" vs. 7.6")

3. I'll get laughed at in the locker room for having smaller rims, and the V-dubbers will lynch me for using GTI rims on a Turd.

Assuming they'll clear the brakes and everything and have a good offset so there's no rubbing issues, I'd say go with the smaller rims and run really small rubber to boot. Something like a 215/45/14. Gearing would rock for acceleration and the sidewall would be nice and short (read stiff). Then again, I am one sick hombre.

Well, depending on what class he is in, there is limitations on what size tire/wheel combo you can run.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Unfortunately though, I can't find any STS legal (>140 treadwear) tires in that kind of size.

Yeah, that.

I wouldn't even bother trying STS with tires that small. They're not even close to legal. But that's what street mod is for.

Which tires? The ones you suggested?

The only requirements for tires in STS are:

1. Maximum width of 225.
2. Minimum treadwear of 140.

I think a Saturn would get laughed out of Street Mod. I may (some day) prepare my Jetta for SM because there are so many easy options for engine swaps. Plus, there's a plethora of suspension options, which Turds just don't have.

Anyway, back to my original question...

Would it be stupid to even try running 195/60/R14's for STS?

I havn't read the rules in some time, but I recall seeing something about the overall tire diameter needing to be within 1/2" of the stock package.

Furthermore, whether or not you'd be competitive in street mod is besides the point. If you're looking to be competitive in your class, you wouldn't run in SM, and if you were in STS, you wouldn't run such heavy wheels.

In that case anyone with 205/50s is in trouble.

go SM. its pretty much a catchall class... you can mod pretty extensively AND you get to use sticky rubber.

My ES100s are 205/50s and are nowhere near an inch smaller than the 195/60 allseasons I run in the winter.
