  • S-series rear sway bars

OK, so my friend who races the #34 ITA Saturn SC is looking for a bigger rear sway bar. Problem is the supply from SPS seems to have dried up. He's got a 16mm on there now, but wants something bigger. He had the 17.5 in mind but it's no longer in production.

I did a search (before you yell at me

Can you guys clue me in to the current availability of bars? Thanks!

Okay, you are correct about the SPS bars, you will only find used ones now. The 17.5 mm is what I have been running and they are still running on the #7 ITA car as well.

Jon is the only guy I know who runs the Progress 19mm on his, he picked it up from SPS clearance section. They had 2 or 3 left at that time.

THe progress is gonna require some fabrication if you go that route, it says right in it's description that IT WILL break parts and it's no joke.

Jon had it on his car (just on the street, never made it to the track), he pushed the car on a corner to feel it and literally broke the rear end (that bolts up to the frame, broke a section off and cracked the rest of it.

We had to get another rear and weld some steel on the rear to make it work.

I just asked him to post up and give better detail for you.

Well I had a good reply typed up and when I went to proof it I managed to lose it in the midst of translating some ww2 German jet papers so please pardon the slightly helter skelter nature of this reply.

Honestly your best bet would be to go to a 17.5mm rear bar and coilovers. Use the coilovers to do your rough settings and then adjust the swaybar in for track conditions. We moved the ITA car to the 17.5 and have never had to go full stiff yet. We are running fairly stiff rear coil springs with Carrera inserts, with the springs as our primary roll control and the sway bar as the fine adjustment. You can start stifen the swaybar up as the grip increases and then soften it up as you experiance rain The 19mm is just overkill. My 19mm was not even on for a week and with no really hard driving I had managed to tear apart the rear sub frame. After building a girdle for a new frame and welding it all up has fixed the problem for now. The 19mm is not needed unless you have an ICW racing or SPS front sway bar on the car to balance it out.

Sweet, thanks! The car's got coilovers (it's James Walker Jr's old ride), and he's looking to get stiffer springs before next year, but also wants a stiffer bar (sounds very much like your setup, actually). Thanks to your info, the 19mm bar is right out. I'll have to find out for sure what bar it's got now, but the 17.5 sounds like the right one to me. Time to hit eBay, I guess.

          Thanks again for the info!

We uhh... have an "extra' SPS 17.5 kicking around. I've gotta ask Tyler if he wants it (Dad was supposed to swap it out in place of his 16 mm, and and that was supposed to go to Tyler, so he is entitled to one of them). Dad may still swap in the 17.5 so I'll have to talk to him.

Oooo, yes, please let me know if that big bar is available, and I'll put you and Jeff (the race car owner) in touch! Thanks!

Wow that sounds nasty. I have the 19mm on the back of my sc2 and have never had problems with it. Ive pushed the car pretty hard, too hard is some cases, with 215/45/17 BFG KDW's and havent broken or bent anything in the 3+ years of having it on there. The only thing i can see, and have herd of it breaking are the links. But for those a set of hiem joints and a threaded rod and youre in business.

Well I did find out upon removal of his setup with the 19MM that he used the old 17.5mm poly bushings from the SPS bar tha was on previously. I realized that the extra pressure that created on the bar was part of the problem. Clamping a bushing cut for 17.5 onto a 19 bar makes for a very tight situation lol.

I run the 19mm bar and I haven't had any problems either(spun the car once but I didn't break anything lol)

Also you can still find them new at some places online. I think summit had them. Just google it, I'm sure something will pop up.
