• needing new tires soon

not sure which section this'd go in, so admins, feel free to move to the appropriate area.

anyways, i gots an ion 2 QC (aka The Blueberry...) which will be needing some new tires in probly 1, possibly 2 oil changes. (i don't want any preaching about how my tires shouldn't be getting worn out after only 15k miles, i'm gonna get enough of that from my parents) i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for tires THAT THEY THEMSELVES have used. i want some tires that have good wet and dry grip, and that have good treadwear ratings. (so that maybe they'll last me for longer than a year, lol)

    15K??? wow

anyway, I've run a set of Yokohama AvidV4s tires for a while now, and prior had the older version of just AvidV4, and both are great IMO. the V4 lasted almost 50K, and the V4s models are said to last longer and be stickier. I think the treadwear on my V4s is 500.

a lot of guys are having luck with the Falken Ziex 512's also, which are very affordable. they don't last as long however, I think their treadwear is 360.

Angel has a set of BF Goodrich g-Force Sport on her 17's and they're pretty awesome too. wet and dry traction is great and handling at the limit is predictable. treadwear is 340 on the Z rated tire. I'm looking at picking up a set of these next.

yeah, i'm just over 15k, and the front tires are aabout 1/8" from the little treadwear "replace tires" bars. the rears aren't as bad, and at the next oil change, the rears are gettin rotated forward, so i might be able to go 2 oil changes...

*edit* and i don't think i need Z rated tires, lol. thanx for advice, i'm gonna start lookin around locally to see what prices i can get at local shops.

http://www.tires.com is going to help you out in finding what will fit and what will meet your needs

the minimum I run is a V rated tire, and I think your firehawks are Z rated actually, or V. with the newer technology they don't wear unrealistically fast, and the increased grip is worth the coin in my opinion.

you don't measure tires in 1/8's, you measure in 32nd's. a tire should be good down till 2/32nd of tread depth, which is where the tread bar is. the tread bar is NOT the deepest part of the tread, it's slightly raised. if you have 1/8" still before you hit the tread wear bar, then you still have plenty of meat on those tires.

I have a tread depth gauge, I'll check yours next time I see your car if you want.

my firehawks are H rated, i believe. 130 mph.

and i ain't sayin i need tires now. i'm saying i'll need em in about 1 month, possibly 2, and the rate my tires have been wearing.

and in my last car, i got it with close to bald tires, and almost wrecked when i hydroplaned, so i don't take chances with my tires.

and since i take so long to research stuff and make decisions, i don't wanna be caught unawares.

changing tires when they are at the wear bar is not taking chances, it's using the equipment as it's designed

if you have that much tread left as you're saying, then you have far more than one month or two left on them

the only cars that I've seen go through their stock tires within 15-20K miles are the Redlines with their 280 treadwear Dunlop SP9000's

H rating is just below V and Z, and only a few dollars cheapr (read: less than 8 typically) than the same tire in V, but quite a bit less sticky.

I have the Falken Ziex 512 tires. I can say that dry traction is a lot better over my stock tires. And driving in wet weather feels like dry weather. For circuit grip, they are ok, and when you want to, you can turn a little extra with te sterring wheel and go for a 4 wheel slide, which is kind of fun. For drag wise, they grip good off the line also.

I also have 16 inch rims that weigh 13 pounds each, so take that into consideration as well.

k, then. i'll be going with at least a V rating.
