• Turbo Buildup Parts and Prices

So after a little chat rear-vue (mike) and I , mainly me, started to consider turboing my 05 Ion 2 Sedan. I have a basic understanding of turbos and what not but my main question is what would I need and what would the prices be for the parts?

Obviously... turbo, piping, intercoolers, fuel controlers, injectors, oil lines, manafold, etc etc

    any help is appreciated

    edit:

I'm looking for around 200whp, I'm getting 18s in about 2 months and I have a stereo to put in the trunk (needs to be cleaned up)

my goal for the car is more of a suttle looker, rims, tint, lowered, hids tinted tails, with a 1500 rms system and gives you a good kick in the ass
    Alpine Type X 12" sub, MRD-1005, MRF-345, Type R components, tinted, lowered 2"

coming- 18" rims, Hids
future plans- goal of 200whp turbod

how many ponies do you wanna put out?

that'll be a big factor in cost.

i'm going for the 300 club, at least, so i'll be spending quite a bit.
with a mild build you could spend probably 2000 - 3000. somewhere around there if you're getting everything new.

Well I guess your first step would be is to figure your goal, how many HP are you looking for? Im sure its safe to say that off of that you can base what turbo would be best suited for that goal. Fuel (control, injectors, pump etc.) would be good to study into a bit more.

A basic understanding is good, but personally I say read up a lot more, gain as much knowledge you can until the only way you can learn more is by doing. Thats how I'd go about it, that way you can troubleshoot more effectivly why something isnt working right and where to look.

Prices greatly depend on what kind or quality of parts you are aiming to get. Ebay is your friend for some parts.

            this is a loaded question

first you need to set a HP goal and if this is your only car ( your DD)

if your only looking for 250HP than I will tell you rite now that buying a new cobalt SS with the supercharger will be cheeper in the long run

of your looking to make a 300HP + beest than look to spend over 4grand

Boost controller, might be a good idea to use weather manual or electronic, wont this help with reliving boost creep or whatever for the most part?

well its been provent a couple times already that safc 2 and widband and honking size injectors will run a car relaibly sofar matt has his for almost 6 months summer, winter, sofar no issues.

i had though of doing a sds eds or whatever the extra injector controller are but i dont like the idea of relying on that mostly if you think about it arent the stock injectors gonna be maxed out once boost hits and then the extra fuel from the 2 injectors come in. i dont think i would want to run the 4 oem injectors at there service limit when he is trying to have some boost fun.

but we plan to do this over a year or so, we are just shotting out into i was clost to turdboing my old sl1 and keep thinking of doing my sl2 i read a shitload about it and still learning but i ended up going to nitrous for simplicity and more reliable DD ability.

it's been done on low boost easy enough (so far that i've heard)

I consider a boost controller to be one of the last things you need to add to a boosted car

if the wast gate is doing its job to your boost level that your looking for than why complecate things

a S-AFC is one of the cheepest ways to add fuel to your can but I would never rely on it for long

if your tryley getting into this turboed thing tyhan dive in with some sort of full stand alone ( even the MS will be bettrer than aney AFC )

but lik ei mentioned before i havent read into much and not sure now much more dificult a MS 2.2 or whatnot will be vs a s afc2 to control fuel. would have to read up alot more on ms and such.

but this is just opinions and see what people think.

wow, quick responce, thanks for all the advice. As for power, as rear-vue stated, i'm looking for around the 200hp area, not retared amounts, just a fun amount. I want something that is unexpected from my car, but not race ish... i know what i mean, i dunno if its coming out that way though...

my friend has a turbod 2002 limited edition vw bug. thats fun, so if I can get anywhere near that I'd have a blast.

you lose too much on an ion when going with a standalone completely, you'd have to keep the stock ECU to control the speedo and power steering, and just take care of fueling with the MS.

honestly, timing is so conservative on the Ion 2.2 that you can get away with quite a decent amount of boost with just an afc. I know of 3 or 4 now doing this for a fuel solution for a mild boost setup (8-14 psi) and they're not having issues at all really. you can hit 200whp with a smaller turbo than a t3/t4 too if you wanted to save some money, maybe just go with a straight t3. you're restricted to firewall clearance back there anyway so keep that in mind.

and actually Brandon, it's not cheaper really to go with a Redline/Cobalt SS unless you get a deal on a used one. it didnt' take much money at all to put down the same times and handling that they do out of the box, and not nearly close to the retail of either 2.0 car. they're still limited to a degree, and the redline/cobalt has a ton of potential, but if he's just looking for that performance it's definitely doable.

haha that beetle has the 150hp 1.8T with decent gearing, it's definitely possible to make it perform like that our far surpass it.

yup ^^ plus adam just bought his car brand new in late 05 so.. ya he doenst wanna trade in cause he'll get rapped.

what about the typical t3 super 60 that most LLO guys use? i though it would be cheap and easy to find.

I'd stick to the t3/t4. Unless for some reason it won't fit, then I'd get a big T3.
