  • Schnookered

So yeah. I purchased a 'T3/T04E' but it upon inspection I note that it looks to me like a T3/T04B.

I tore down the turbo and much to my surprise. Bad carbon deposits and shitty everything. So I'm looking at rebuilding the entire thing; T-Wheel, Compressor, Bearing and seal rebuild, and both Comp and Turbine Housings. I got schnookered on a turbo that I thought was good by the pics. The one good thing is that it actually is an AiResearch turbo. Checked the p/n and s/n. So it's not one of those TurboXS shits. Either way it's getting rebuilt with Turbonetics parts and is going to cost me about the same for a new turbo in the long run...Live and Learn I guess.

It should be a fun learning experience putting together a turbo...like a tiny jet engine.

Anyone have any tricks for pulling the Compressor retaining nut...the Turbine hex is rounded like some idiot(other than me) tried to disassemble the turbo and I am having a hard time getting the Comp retaining nut off. They aren't reverse threaded are they?

Turbonetics has some IPB's and such. I can finger it out. It's kind of a blessing in disguise b/c it teaches me a bit more about the more intricate workings of the turbo rather than just being a dipshit slapping it on my car.

Knowing is half the battle! LOL

I'd be pissed. Hopefully you didn't spend too much on it.

turbonetics, is all garret internails...you sure you need new wheels and housings? The wheels nicked up/missing fins? If not, id just clean everything and do a seal/bearing kit and call it a day...maybe help you save a few bucks

I just tracked down the info on the turbo. Take a gander... it's a bit smaller than a T3/T04E 60 Trim Comp, .63 A/R Turbine. It's actually a T3 '50 Trim'. Definately not happy. Oh well live and learn.

                  Specs:
                  -Model: Garrett/Airesearch TB0326 (T3 Series)
                  -OE Part #: 465446-9
                  -Wastegate setting: ~7 psi
                  -Compressor Trim: 50
                  -Turbine Trim: 69
                  -Compressor Housing a/r: .42
                  -Turbine Housing a/r: .48
                  -Oil Cooled Only
                  -Recommended applications: 150-275hp, 1.5L-2.2L

No dice...private sale thru the Redline Forums and the guy was hurting for ducats so the $$ is already spent, most likely.

so fucking what, you didn't get what you paid for, he should refund your money. And if he doesn't want to, let it be known that he scammed you so that at the very least everyone will know about it and no one will trust him anymore

The turbine nut is rounded off due to the balancing process. It be like that on just about any turbo you pick up, new or used.

What I do to get it off is put a shop rag around it so that the turbine fins don't get messed up and stick the nut into a vice and point the compressor side straight up...then take the compressor nut off... BUT you need to be carful not to twist the turbo back and forth in the vice and crush the turbine fins into the vice jaws while you try to torque on it...you need to try to keep the force very steady and no sudden jolts that may occur with the nut suddenly breaking loose. I long 12 pointed closed ended wrench with a cheater hooked up to the open end will usually give you more torque for easier control while loosening the nut.

I made 329 with a to4b compressor...but that was the limit with my compressor. If you want to look into upgrading the compressor wheel look into the 60-1. Its an old proven design. I think it will fit into a B cover, but if not, put it in an E cover....or you could get a T61 wheel and an E cover. Both compressors will be great for a 275-400hp goal.

This is actually a T3 turbo. Just a touch less than the T04B. I don't think that a 2.2L will be able to breathe very well through that T3. I am certainly considering some of the things you are speaking of S.Bretz.

I'm actually going to have to rebuild it into a T3/T04E (60 Trim Comp/Stg 3 Turbine, .63 A/R housing) ...it will put me at the HP goal I am seeking quite easily with good response and decent driveability. Although I was considering a T04S or 60-1 housing rather than the E housing. Talk me into or out of it. I also have to consider space contraints due to the turbo fitting up against the firewall and such nots.

Do you happen to know of a place that can balance turbos? Unless they are balanced prior to arriving.

sounds like the same thing that happened to me. im still out at least $100 and paypal cant get ahold of the guy no more. he discarded his old paypal and ebay accounts for new ones. it was an authentic airresearch, but FAR from what he said.

so i know how bad it sucks.
