oil and water cooled turbos prevent oil coking. after the engine is shut down (even after a cool down) heat from the turbine housing, manifold, and head will heat up the center section. the water cooled part helps cut the heat down to prevent the coking of the oil.

i know what it is supposed to do....but what are the differences between them?...i hear all the time that" you want oil cooled only" why is that?
what are the drawbacks of water cooled?

from what was explained to me, it's good to run both, but the coolant temp is going to rise due the turbo being plumbed in.

I mean it would sound ideal in theory but I dont' know many who run water also on the LL0.

the drawback to coolant line, you have to splice it in somewhere. thats why everyone says you want oil cooled only. it will probably heat the coolant up quicker. im going to run both on my car, of course heat wont be an issue for me since i already have an aluminum radiator and 2100cfm fan, which i might add another fan to the otherside.

too late...lol...i already have the turbo...its a t25 (dont worry i know how small it is) and it has lines for both...but being as small as it is i shouldnt have to worry alot about the heat as long as i get a good fan and pack my radiator...i should be ok ?

                pack radiator?

with the stock radiator, even with decent to really good fans, the car will probably want to run hot and keep the fans on. although the winter weather helps.

an aluminum radiator will help dissipate the heat, and with the larger capacity you get more cooling. when temps do get upwards, a very high cfm fan will bring it down, instead of like lower cfm (god forbid stock, if you tried to even work around it) where the fan could just stay on constantly.

iirc you can pack weather stripping material around the fan and radiator shroud to allow a more direct air flow or something like that.

the reason you don't run coolant lines is because the engine will overheat. you will more then likly run pretty hot without anything done to the coolant system besides some slim fans. if your living in a hot area, get ready for a all aluminum radiator, lower temp thermostat and some kick ass fans. llo isn't designed for the extra heat generated by the center section of a turbo. the cooling system pretty much sucks as it is.

oil cooling is easyer because you just plump oil and your done. as long as your not beating the hell out of it and shutting the car off right after, you'll be fine. most turbos fail way before cooked oil will have anything to do with it. its usually the thrust and the the oil seals that go first. i havn't seen more then a coulple turbos that had cooked turbine shafts.

water cooling is better, however its not needed. you'll probably toast the turbo or the motor way before the benifits of water cooling come into affect.
