  • Boost Controller

I was just curious how effective these manual boost controllers really are. Are they safe to use and how reliable are they? I see like ALL of ebay is flooded with them. Only see a few outrageously priced Greddy, AVC-R's and other electronic boost controllers. But I don't want to spend that much on them. Any help here would be nice. Thanks.

well as with all things you get what you pay for. With my avcr I have a two stage boost setting meaning I can have setting A at one boost setting and B at another (hi/lo), you can set boost based on rpm, or you can set boost based on gear... all from the comfort of inside your car and even on the fly. In addition it allows a slight datalog that can monitor rpm/boost/solenoid duty cycle/otherthings/spacetime. In my opinion it was worth the $350 I paid for it.

The manual controllers are fine, nothing wrong with most of them, but keep this in mind... it is a block of metal used to control pressure based on the tension of a coiled piece of hardened steel (a spring) and a small steel ball. The tension of the spring dictates the amout of pressure required before the ball is pushed back which in turns allows pressure through the controller to the wastegate which (if higher than the preset wastegate pressure) will allow excess pressure to escape while trying to maintain constant boost pressure....all done... by a ball and a little spring, set by you turning a tension knob. You can get one for $25 and be set until it breaks.... if/when it breaks.

You get what you pay for.

Roger that...AVC-R it is. Lol, just seems like an awful lot of $$$ to throw down on that. Having the ability to have a low boost for in town and a hi boost for track days would be nice, rather than fiddly-farting around with a knob.

Just outta curiousity how much boost are you running. I'm looking at about 9-10 daily and 15-20 track as the build dictates.

during initial tuning I ran 5lbs and just before the headgasket blew, 22lbs is what the gauge spiked at.
