  • Head change!!

Hey how hard would it be to change the head from SOHC to DOHc and i need to know what parts i would have to get.

if you just swap the head then you will have super oober low compresion and it will run like shit.....
just do the swap witha DOHC motor

    ....unlesssss you are running boost??

I swapped heads, and I have the same compression as a DOHC.

the SOHC pistons have lower compresion i though, like 8:1 as opposed to 9:1
        i could be wrong though

          Only 91-99? or 91-98?

98 or 99+ have the same pistons as the DOHC.

The SOHC pistons are alot higher than 8:1. I think they're 8.5 or 8.7 to one, whereas the DOHC are 9.5:1

I think that's 3 strikes...I'll only count it as two, though.

Why am I an ass? Because I'm right?

I'm not picking internet fights. My penis is big enough.

Just don't post if you don't have all the info. Simple enough.

                sarcasm.........
anywho the sohc piston and rod combo do create lower compression in the first gens and thats what i was basing my info on

Except that you're wrong about it running like crap. It'll run fine, just won't make all the power of the stock DOHC.

low compression = poor performance yeah.....it will run like crap compared to what he is probly thinking it will run like

not really, it will make maybe 10 horses less if that

the 91-98 I believe have the super dished pistons, 91-02 had mild dished (it might have been 91-97 and 98-02, I tend to confuse that bastard year)

the reason the pistons are dished is because the SOHC head has almost a flat combustion chamber as opposed to the pent roof of the DOHC head, so they needed to make room somewhere else. a lot of guys will run that combo with boost since compression is down to around 8.5 or maybe a few points higher as opposed to the stock 9.5:1 CR.

I've seen a few people do this without boost and they performed alright, but if you want to possibly run low boost on this engine later on I'd take this route for sure.

                        YES, you can do it.

                        I just did it.

NO, you should not do it. It's 100x easier to buy a new car, or drop a whole engine in.

Here's a list of some of the stuff you're going to need:

                        Head
                        Intake manifold
                        Exhaust manifold/downpipe
                        Fuel rail
                        Injectors
                        Coolant lines
                        Cams
                        Cam bolts
                        Timing chain cover
                        Timing chain kit
Oil pan tie plate and pickup tube

Probably lots of other random crap. Just get a donor car, or a complete motor. It sounds like you have absolutely no idea how a car works, so just buy a new one.

99+ sohc pistons are the same as twin cam pistons.

ONly 91-98 sock pistons have a dish.

I always second guess that they started in 98 since it's the second bastard year like 95. bah.

I thought '99 was the other bastard year. I'm somewhat certain the engine change was in '99, with early '99s being like the older engines, the later '99s like the last engines.

I know a guy who did the DOHC head swap and still had the SOHC pistons, and I've seen the car in person. Ran & performed fine.
