  • Question About AT

Ok, well this is my first post on here. I found this site on cardomain, and after reading some threads here it sounds liek you guys really know your stuff.

Well, on to my question. I have a 97 sc2 and It sadly has an AT in it. I cant afford a manual swap nor am i mechanically inclined to do it. But i was wondering if there are any shift kits out for the Saturn AT, or if something liek that would even be logical to put in. I understand that it is an AT, but maybe there is something to make having an AT such a disadvantage.

Im not looking to get ragged on here, just looking for some info. Thanks guys

First off Welcome to the sphere!
I wouldn't be upset about an Auto. If I had an auto I could spray through the shifts and possibly get a better time!
Correct me if I'm wrong (everyone who knows) but I think the fastest Saturn IS an auto

can you put a manual valve body in a saturn?? cause that would be kinda like a shift kit

no, the fastest Saturns use a manual trans.
The fastest tube chassis with a Saturn badge on it had a fully manual automatic.

although, Nefarious ran a good e/t with his modified auto trans
LSJ powered 1998 Chevy S-10 turbo

Thanks for the welcome, and I wasnt sure about having an AT. Everytime I say it to someone they just laugh. I drive my auto just like a manual, I just wish they had the option of 1,2,3,D not 2,3,D . Id like to be able to stay in first a bit longer. Although the little PERF/ Normal switch helps alot. i had really planned on building this car up because I love driving a saturn, I dont care what people say its fun. but then again having a stock AT really limits the amount of power you can put through it. I mean Manual clearly gives you the option of stronger clutch plates and such. I think I read on that Turbosaturn website that the AT should be ok up to about 200hp? That would be nice especially considering how light these cars are. Im not a car genius or anything, and Im not trying to act like one. I just go kind of by what I have been reading. I am very curious about this though. So thanks for your help.

WHOA, Please say you don't too much. I know that shifting an auto can cause serious problems if done wrong. I once owned a Trans Am with a shift kit and blew my seals from shifting it all the time instead of letting auto take it through the gears. As far as upgrades just plan out your build from scratch before buying ANYTHING, for example don't get a CAI (or exhaust) if you plan on getting a turbo, it will be money thrown away. All mods properly planned will benefit more.

Well I haven't blown any seals yet, but thanks for the heads up. Its just that if i let it shift through by itself it also seems a lot slower. Like you would expect it to be i guess. But if liek when im in 2 i run it up, then all I do is let off the gas quick throw it into 3rd then gas again. This is exactly why i have been trying to find a place to get good info like this. Ya if anything substantial is going to be done it will definately be planned out. I dont have the time or money to waste liek that.

Just ignore the fact that im new with this stuff... So there is no shift kit for the saturn AT?? Or any modifications?? The manual valve body sounded interesting, but I didnt see anyone respond on whether that would work or not.

I spoke with schizzo about a torque converter upgrade but never got into it with him otherwise I could give you more info. For automatics, I have noticed better MPG and smoother shifts with NORM, and PERF for faster shifts, and more of a race setup for the computer, where it will downshift faster, and more recent, and leave it in gear longer as well.

consider a trans cooler if you are going to beat on that car with the auto in there.

also even though it's automatic maybe a welded diff pin so there's less to fail
