  • Opinions about buying a big bore throttle body needed...

Hi all.....I have a 1997 SC1 with the 1.9 liter EFI/SOHC engine. I am considering getting a bored throttle body.
I have neither the tools or knowledge to do one myself. I am wanting opinions on who sells the better verses cheaper ones.
I saw one on their web page at Saturn Motor Sports and emailed them about it.
They said it would fit my car but I need to know if they will just bolt right up.
Did I mention I am not very mechanically inclined....LOL...so making any sort of brackets or modifying linkage is out for me.

    Thanks for your advice

I used to do them but haven't lately, need a new tool for it since mine broked itself making my solenoid plate/cover

the SMS one will fit and work, but I dont' know how well.

the best one made IMO is the SPS one, if they still have them.

I really don't think a BB t-b will make much difference on an SOHC. I didn't start seeing any detectabl vacuum on mine until after the 6K-6200 area on my DOHC. The SOHC will be in need of less air.

...start saving up for a DOHC engine from a yard and go pull a DOCH PCM an cluster from a yard on one of your days off.

Gotta go with Sam on that. You will wind up spending money on mods and than realize you should have swapped the engine. Do that first and than start doing some bolt-ons.

I have an SPS throttle body that I have been very happy with on my DOHC but I also pulled it from a car at the junkyard so for free (bottom of toolbox lol) I can't really complain.

                Yeah thats not gonna happen.
I am pushing the limits already with just changing the TB out.
                Change an engine out...LMAO.

Pressures and stresses of all kinds thermal and mechanical loading across the board escalate to extreme levels. A Chevrolet 5.7-liter LS1 V8 with this much specific power (horsepower per cubic inch) would be making 2,137 hp

That sucks man and I am sorry to hear it. We all started out that way at one point. You will learn as you go as alot of us have (and still are, I know I am) and don't let people bother you when they start raggin' on you for having a SOHC.

We like to rip on eachother alot around here so don't take it personally.

DOHC swap or keep it stock...you will probably notice nothing out of a bb throttle body....dont tell me the car is automatic too?

yeah the bb throttle body will bring your quartermile from like 17 or 18s to 17s or 18s
                      so it really doesnt matter

There is always the option of selling the car and buying one that is already a twin cam.

Give it a shot man. How serious are you about your car? If your a hard enthusiest with some serious intentions then shoot for a DOHC swap. If your just looking to ehance the driving experience iny our SOHC then drop the money on that throttle body. I grew up around the automotive hobby and tinkered with things when I was younger so jumping onto to the car wasn't too daunting for me. I can still agree with the guys though, we all started somewhere, some ahead of the others. Heck, I remember installing my AEM Intake two or so years ago... now I take it off for regular detailing. And trust me, I'm not wizard. I broke two exhaust manifold studs last year because I didn't prep the car for the header install (new england corrosion owned), fortunatly my Dad was able to bail me out of that one.

You will always be learning. Heck, now I'm researching forced induction... its a very intimidating field with an overwhelming amount of learning and information. But uhh... to answer your original post, if your not going to port the throttle body yourself, just go with the SPS one.
