• Bought Glasspack...already have similar???

I got a 27" magnum glasspack for my '96 SL2 hoping to quiet down my BOMZ muffler but when i took it in to have it put on, Midas showed me that i already had a resonator on it that looked pretty similar to magnum glasspack, only dirtier and rustier....is it true that the magnum wouldn't do anything different than what's on there??? I'm assuming the resonator was stick with the car, because i never had one put on.

stock twin cams have a short resonator on the exhaust system to keep it quiet. chances are it's not doing a whole lot. what you can do is put the glasspack on there, and rest assured it will change the tone and volume.

are you doing this with all stock piping? that tends to affect things also

yea i am doing this with all stock piping....would that make it quieter by putting the glasspack on?

        very well could.

look into upgrading your piping to 2.25" too, it will affect sound as well as performance

you have a stok resonator...a glasspack is completely different.

A resonator lets certain frequencies dies out in the chamber by boucing back and forth and canceling s like waves out when they collide, a glass pack is not a hollow chamber like a resonator. They have a luvered tube down the middle with fiberglass packed between the luvered tube and the outter casing. With a little back pressure the glass pack will absord some of the sound, but if you hav a strainght threw muffler and easy flowing exhaust piping (larger then stock mandrel bent), then the glass pac won't do much for sounds deading....it will do some, but not much.

If you look in the glass pack, the louvers "scoop" the air flow one direction and dont in the opposite direction...if it scoops, it will be quiterthen it f it doesn't.

              Glasspack with stock pipes

In my '96 SL2 I do have stock piping all the way through, with the stock resonator and a BOMZ canister style muffler on the end...so will putting the 27" thrush magnum glasspack on in place of the stock resonator ( which is 10 years old) help quiet it down??

Why would you put a ricey exhaust on your car if you want it to be quiet?

Put a stock muffler on it. It'll work wonders.

well you could put a better flowing muffler on a car and not have it sound like ass warmed over, but buying a cheap one off ebay is not exactly the way to do it

Isn't the only real issue with our exhaust the piping, not the muffler?

Obviously anything is going to be a restriction, but I don't see you getting more than .25hp from a "free-flowing" muffler.

                      yes and no

aside from the piping, the muffler that's stock on some isn't so bad, but one with a higher CFM rating is going to out perform it obviously. since the muffler is at the end of the exhaust, the more flow you can get the better, as to have less of a bottleneck.

research muffler designs, specifically deflection, that was what I was referencing too. spork was speaking as if you could run a stock muffler on larger piping and get the same gain as larger piping on a muffler that flows better

I see, but you could get a aftermarket muffler also and put a turn down on it if you wanted a stock look. Like thosesleeper seies mufflers in your issue of super street, which I am DYING to get.

you could cut a stock one open, bout a pipe right through it, and weld it back together too, 0 restriction and OEM look, but it would be loud as balls
