• Are All Fartcans Built Alike??

    Hey everybody,

We'll, I've been gettin the itch to get an exhaust put on the ION and was looking at some mufflers a.k.a. Fartcans on ebay and was wondering whats the difference from the $25 mufflers and the $150 mufflers. I understand that its probadly the fiberglass packing in the muffler itself but how much would it affect the noise. I had a OBX muffler on my SL2 and it sounded great but there are some on ebay that are half the price and look exactly the same. Anybody have one of the ebay cheapo mufflers and how do they hold up and sound?

    Thanks

I got mine off ebay for like $75 shipped...

    [pic]779[/pic]

I love the sound of mine... but then again, I have a 32" Glasspack in the mix too... so I dunno what it sounds like by itself

I've had it now for 3 years (both in PA and FL) no rust, discoloring or anything... and the car sat for a year in PA before I brought it to FL... and was never started the entire time... seems pretty sturdy

    my setup is as follows:

    92 header --> 92 downpipe --> 2.25 Hi-Flow Cat --> 32" glasspack --> 2.25 mandrel bent piping --> ebay fartcan

I know you said Ion... but I'm sure with a glasspack it'll be fine

A Thrush Magnum Glasspack goes for like $25 at AutoZone... so if you get the muffler cheap and add the Glasspack, you should should still be under $100 and have a decent sound (not the "buzzy-weed-whacker-on-acid" sound)

      Sounds like a plan.

I did have a glasspack on the SL2 and it helped a crap load and I do plan on putting a glasspack with the fartcan when I do the exhaust on the ION.

I dig the canister style. I didnt know the tip had anything to do with sound, is the bigger the tip the deeper or vice versa?

I always thought the bigger the tip, the more VVV--TTTAAKKK your packin

              Wudd up David,

My dad needed a ride and I got a promotion so I said fuggit and got me an ION-2. Really wanted a manual and I got a good deal. The SL2 is still kickin but its stock now, but still sounds nice cuz it still has the 2.5 piping on it.

^^^HAHA my SL1 is the same way, all it has now is:

the engine mounts, 2 1/2 pipping and the intake

                Cool shit dude!!

N E WAYS when you're getting a muffler usually the longer that sucka is the deeper it is in tone, but dude a glasspack goes a long way, I'm about to do that same shit to the little red scateboard I have here

ok I propose this if you want a canister style setup

                  -2.5" piping
-either a 36-40" length, 2.5" inlet glasspack or one of those moroso spiralflow inline mufflers (I think the second would sound meaner personally)
-a 2.5" inlet canister style muffler that's at least 14" long with no larger than a 3" tip (that's hard to find since 3.5 is typically the standard, but IMO the 3" won't pop and buzz as much; your call though)

I would personally look at a chambered muffler and oversize it by .25 at the inlet to compensate flow wise with a non-flasy tip, but then again that's just me.

I like this style a lot, and it is what we went with on Omar's car, only we shortened the tops to roughly 4" or so: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HKS-DUAL ... enameZWD1V

Look at macho w/ his sleeper shit

R U proud of my exhaust macho is almost like that!

It looks stockish, but like when they decide to "upgrade" you're exhaust at the dealership and put a little nicer tiny tip to it.

shit if this wasn't so got awful huge of a tip I would say jump on one of these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GREDDY-S ... dZViewItem

n2osaturn had one and he really liked it, only thing was the tip is 4.5", real fetus launcher status, but hey it was good quality, only had to drill out the flange holes a little bit from what I remember.

I just found this too which is funny because I was just trying ot remember if it was ever released: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VIBRANT- ... dZViewItem

I'm a big Borla fan myself, and am impressed with Magnaflow as of late too. A lot of guys here have had luck with Dynomax as well.

if you REALLY want to go the road less traveled then you could go with a Spintech muffler. I had one on my SC2 and loved it. It was loud and sounded plenty mean, and flows a shit ton. I had Sportsman Street with a 3" oval tip on it.

I forgot to ask what would be the advantage to having a Chambered muffler v. a straight thru design?? I had a super turbo on both my escort and my SL2. I found that with the stock piping on the escort it was pretty good and has a nice tone to it. With my SL2 w/2.5 piping and 31" glasspack, It sounded really nice but the drone was nuts!! I find that the straight thru's drone less. Does anybody have an ION with a Super Turbo on it that can say how much drone it has. Thing is I'm going to school in tampa in the fall and have a lot of kissimmee/tampa driving to do, so I dont wanna show up where I'm going with a headache, ya know what I'm sayin.

I've found that the straight through designs have a tendency to drone more than chambered.

the difference is tyipcally sound, both tone and volume

aside from my old HKS and my current Borla setup, you're going to have to expect to deal with some sort of drone from the system, it is a 4 cyl after all.

you know I might still have my old HKS cat-back somewhere. if Sally doesn't want it anymore you're welcome to it.
