  • my exhaust problem *update*

i think i got a problem with my exhaust... whenever i crank up the car and whenever i give it light throttle, i can hear something rattling underneath...it's probly still rattling at higher throttle, but i can't hear it cause of the exhaust.... any ideas for me to look at under there?

loose or worn hangers? were the welds in the piping good? It could just e the exhaust hitting the frame, it happened with my pacesetter, and I just had to try mounting it different ways.

cats shit in litter boxes dummy. And if you catalytic converter was bad, then the car would stink, and the 2nd O2 sensor would probably make the car act funny. MAYBE, I dont know OBDII that well.

are Ion's OBD2? You'd think with all the electronic assist shit on them they'd have sumthing different, but I dunno...

I would say cat, but I think in another post he claimed he didnt have one... probably a bummed hangar weld...

i still have stock cat. don't have any mufflers. and i dunno if any electronic sensors have been tripped as autozone's readers can't read my car, and the engine light is still on from the air sensor...next time i get it parked on asphalt somewhere, i'm probly gonna crawl under and take a look. that's at least one benefit of not being lowered... hmm...is it normal or not, though? wonder if it could have anything to do with that neighbor girl trying to squirt water up the tailpipe....

a friend of mine said it sounded like the piping was hitting the chassis...but i couldn't see how that was possible...

If it's an ION I gotta say heatshield. Sounds lke the exhaust heatshield is probably touching the exhaust or just loose somewhere. Used to see it at the dealership on Ions here and there.

9 times out of 10, you can just bend the heatshield away from the problem.

that seems to make sense...i'll check it out next time the piping is cool, lol.

on the other hand, a few months ago, i DID catch a girl from the neighborhood trying to squirt water from our hose up my tailpipe, could that in any way cause damage? (besides the possibility of rust in the pipe)

I doubt you could get enough water in your system to cause major problems, but that's only a guess.

As for the cat, I just can't see it on an '05, but who knows?

I still vote heatshield. Does it sound tinny or kind of a raspy sound at idle? Get someone to rev it lightly at idle while you look under it and try to find the area of the problem.

....also, your car has a stainless steel exhaust, so no rust problems.

                          highly highly unlikely

                          heat shield or hanger issue
