  • dohc swap harness?

ok i wnat to do the sohc to dohc on my 93 sl and i know i need the computer to convert form tbi to tpi but is there anything i need to do to the wiring harness? also doi NEED pistons or will the stock sohc ones work thanks

  • #2
hell be easier to get the dohc motor with the harness connected. that would probably make the job that much easier. and yes you need the harness, and you can keep the pistons if you actually go that route, but compression will be lower then a stock dohc.

you'll need the DOHC harness from a 93-94 so it will plug into the under-hood junction box, a DOHC PCM and a gauge cluster... thats about all I remember changing

I did this swap myself if you need any pointers

if I think of sumpin else, I'll let ya know

I don't know what all this talk of pistons is about... are you doing a WHOLE swap (from TBI to DOHC) or just a head swap?

yes i want to do the whole swap but since the block and everything is the same any way il just keep that and what exactly do i need to complete the swap im keeping the same trans why would that make any difference to he guages... and the pcm is a given because of the tbi to tpi, and i wanted to make it a turbo eventually so wouldnt the lower comp. be a good thing??? i was told you should lower the compression on any motor to put on a turbo, but this guy has a cuople of spun bearings upstairs

you mean tbi to mpfi. it be best to get the whole motor. yes lower compression is good on turbo'd cars, but the stock dohc will be fine since you wont be boosting much since its stock, so lower compression isnt needed. the instrument cluster pretty much is a means of running the car, so you need that.

the reason its better to get the whole motor is because of all the extras you will probably forget. and with the tbi you need the harness so why not pull the engine with it? with the other sohc, its fine to just do the head swap but with tbi more is needed so i just think its easier to get the motor.

wella local junkyard told me a complete top end w intake and exhaust and efi unit for 75 and a ecm for 20 so cant i just do it that way and get the timing cover and such w it i think it would include the engine harness and i could prolly fanagle the guages ata the same time. side question if i got the different guages my speedo would be off cuz im using the same trans w the 130mph guages instead of the 110 right??

nope, I'm using the original TBI SOHC tranny with my DOHC and my speedo is fine...

I scored my DOHC cluster off ebay for like $13... just get it

the PCM runs the car... the gauges are for the monitoring of vehicle speed, RPMs and other spiffy light up stuffs...

I'm willing to bet... no scratch that... I HAVE run my car without gauges in it... it ran fine... of course, I have no fucking clue what my RPMs, speed and anything else was... but it RAN without them

do you have the sc or the sl because i think the sl has longer gear ratios which might mean a difference in speedo calibration

                  I have a WAGON!

And I don't think there's a difference in the gearing between the SC and SL...

hey if you left the sohc cluster there would be no problem, right?

this is Brian (ProjectSW1) posting form the wife's computer...

Dunno... never tried it, but like I said, I ran the car with NO gauges at all for a while...

I would imagine it would be "off" in some ways if you did use the SOHC cluster, but again... not 100% sure because I never tried it... and I don't still have my old Cluster to try it either

you can use it but the calibration will be off because the needles will be reading for a DOHC cluster. But all the dash lights, fuel, oil, temp, etc. will still function properly
