Lightweight Flywheels:

    How do they work?

---A lighter Flywheels causes you're engine to use less strain to turn the flywheel. Any moving engine component has parasitic drag, since the engine has to make enough power to move that part and then make HP.

Vital engine componets that cannot be taken out benefit from a lighterweight version of those.

    Benefit?

----a lighter flywheel has the benefits of revving at a far faster rate than a normal flywheel. It will seem that the engine is more "Hyper" than normal and revving in neutral has the almost instant effect of hitting you're Rev Limiter in about a second.

A lighter flywheel will allow you're engine to accelerate faster (it revs more freely) and it gives you a slight boost in HP up on top (The engine has those HP "freed" since it doesn't need them to turn the heavy flywheel)

Another Excellent benefit is the longetivity of you're engine, the lighter flywheel will cause less stress to you're engine making it last longer. (don't expect miracles people)

    So what's the Catch??

-----With any performance and/or aftermarket part there is ALWAYS catch.

Besides the fairly hefty $200+ price tag that most lightweight flywheels have, you also need to take apart the tranny to shove it in there (more $$$ if you're not an expert)

BUT there is also a certain aspect to the flywheels, the lighter they are the more sensitive they are, let me explain:

When you launch you're car from the hole, you have to be more carefull, the flywheel does NOT have the same momentum that the heavier ones have. This leads to the car SEVERLY bogging down if you don't launch correctly. If you just dump the clutch the revs will drop like a rock and you're going to have a hesitating engine for a while there.

It is Imperative that you "relearn" how to launch with a lighter flywheel.

also normal driving is affected somewhat: When you are taking off in 1st, if you do not hit the gas the right way the car is going to shut off w/out any warning, the revs will drop and you're car is off. Period. This is normal and just takes some getting used to.

also if you also decide to be cool (like me peeps

i think people take the light flywheel too far. yes i notice quicker revs, but its not like insanely quick. also dont have to worry about over revving when trying to take off, unless you suck with a clutch. really i havent noticed too much of a difference other then actually driving it.

i sort of like my aluminum flywheel, but makes me mad i cant hold steady throttle pulling hills on the highway no more. but its nice being able to pull out of 30mph in 5th gear pretty quick.<<<<< thats always nice

but i guess if i get some money to put a little more juice into the car, i will like it more. but i got to say, spending almost $500 on it im not thrilled for the money as it is now.

wish i could vote, but you dont have a "ah its ok"

Definitely a good investment...esp. if you plan on taking out your tranny anywayz.
