• electrical or mechanical gauge?

    which is better?

im looking at an oil pressure gauge

    mechanical or electrical

i would think mechanical because if i were to get an electrical one i would have to splice into the oil pressure sending unit correct?

and if i were to splice into the sending unit wouldnt i run the risk of changeing the voltage signal to the pcm? or am i just thinking too much?

    thanx

I personally prefer all electric gauges, just so that there is wire running into the cabin, and not lines with fluids.

Your thinking too much. lol The electric gauge will come with a pre-wired sending unit which can be put into one of the oil galley plugs on the back of the block. I don't have a picture of it anymore, maybe someone who has a picture or a block sitting around can post up so you can see clearly where it goes.

How hard is it to get the oil galley plugs off? I got new ones from saturnparts.com in my overhaul kit, but i havent taken the old ones off my block yet.

          It's easy, but I used a 3/8" impact.

Electrical are a lot more expensive but are the best.

Just remove the stock sender and put the aftermarket one in it's place with some teflon tape or paste.

The stock sender does nothing but illuminate the idiot light.

I cracked one of the galley plugs loose, it was the wrong size for a sender, and was fairly difficult to get off...would be pretty impossible with the engine in the car, I think.

Electrical>mechanical...unless you like running a hose full of hot oil within a few inches of your head...that's your business, I guess.

and what size fitting is the oil galley next to the oil pressure sending unit?

                  thanx

Just take the stock pressure sender out. It only triggers the light when you have no oil pressure, and it's pretty much too late already. If you got a gauge what do you need a light for anyways? The Autometer gauges come with a fitting that goes right in there. But be sure to use teflon tape. I didn't and had a steady stream of oil running out of there. Put some tape on and didn't even have to tighten it very hard and no more leaks.

I can second every single word he said in that paragraph

The reason it leaks is because the fitting is taper thread, and the hole is straight thread, or vice versa.

I did keep my oem sender and used one of the galley plugs with an adaptor. I could so I did.

hav another question.....there was a thread on PR that talked about some1 talking to a saturn tech and he told him to stick the power side of the sending unit into the "SUN" fuse under the dash cuz it still gets power even if u dont hav a sunroof.....well i dont hav a sunroof

but i think his was a 2nd gen and well i hav a 1st gen...does this still apply?

what other options do i hav to power the sending unit?

                            thanx

you could do that for the gauge but the sending unit is a single wire that goes to the gauge for signal.

dunno about the power at the sunroof slot on the fuse block
