go to a fabric store and get whatever you like. Make sure it is foam-backed. 3M upholstery adhesive in the spray can works the best.

Not to contradict anyone here, I just wanted to point out that I've been using 3M spray adhesive to put furniture backing material on MDF boards and on ceiling tiles (blacking out in my home theater). After about three to six months the stuff lets go and the material sags.

I haven't used it on a headliner yet (was going to experiment with that, until my vehicle got totalled and I bought the Saturn) but I just wanted to share that it hasn't held all that well for me.
