  • shoe polish "car chalk" shit...how to get it off

ok, i didn't post anything about this back when it happened, cause i knew a few people would post smartass remarks about it. but here's what happened: about a month and a half ago person or persons uknown essentially vandalized my car. wrote shit all over it with that shoe polish like stuff that's used on car windows at like graduations and weddings and such. except that they used it on the paint and vinyls on my car. they also covered my mirrors in about a half inch layer of petroleum jelly and filled up the cavity under the door handles with that shit too. took me forever to get the mirrors back to where i could actually see objects with em. i was able to get most of the shoe polish shit off of the car, but there's still a noticeable amount left on both the paint and the vinyls. what can i use to safely get this off?

and yes, i know some people hate the vinyls and the blue paint...good for you, it's a free country and you're entitled to your opinion. but as i am asking for help with this problem, i would greatly appreciate it if you could refrain from making smartass comments in this thread.

have you tried to wash it with a "coarse" sponge?

you may want to look into some sort of clear coat scrub to get it out of the paint.

as much as you don't want to hear it, you probably can't get it out of the vinyl. if you used the scrub on it, it would probably mess it up, so there's not much option there but to remove it if it's really that bad. my corners have something similar to it, and rust from the shop that worked on it grinding a body panel next to it, and is stained now and will not come off no matter what I do.

Try a micro-polishing cloth. Usually good for cleaning things with no chemicals. You also might want to try a light rubbing compound or a clay bar. The stuff may not come of the vinyls though

You can get micro-pol clothes at wally world. I would try this first since that stuff is designed to come off with soap and water

WD-40 will get the white wax residue off the bumper...so will armor all.

I wouldn't use protectants to take it off, they usually attract road grime. Usually the towel should take it off. I use micros for this too. Sometimes when it dries you can mist it with a little water to soften it back up

seriously though...that might work...i'll have to see if i can find some. at the very least, since that shit's made to work on everything, i don't think it'd hurt anything.

the acetone won't damage the paint, vinyl, or the plastic body panels?

your problem now is that so much time has elapsed that it will have stained your clear coat.... and sad to say you will probably have to take the vinyls off, that shit doesn't come out of vinyl that most use for graphics. but you need to find a detail shop and get a qoute to see how much a complete copound/polish job will cost.... that should restore the finish, but that powdery blue color is a bitch to get staining out of, one of our customers did something similar and it came out with a good buffing and polish, for your mirrors try some 91% alcohol on a peice of terry cloth and rub the mirriors, it will be a pain but once it comes clean but some polish on the glass.
